You should have been around during the World Cup last year. The opening game was missing the commentary entirely in the audio and part of the second game of the tournament as well. Plus Fox forgetting to cut to the studio stuff during half time and leaving us on the raw stadium world feed as well during most of the World Cup.... okay that's not such a bad thing compared to being subjected to listening to Alexi Lalas. He makes you yearn to be listening to Joe Buck in comparison he's that annoying.

Ha ha, yes, Lalas is insufferable ! And I was definitely around last summer for the 4K World Cup games; they were the reason I rushed to set up my 4K HR54 and c61's by last spring... And I do remember the early games with all the audio chaos, they were a doozy..

But those audio issues were originating with FIFA in Russia... Here, we're talking about NCAA games in the USA directly controlled by DTV's audio switcher. Someone here needs to catch when there's no audio play-by-play announcing being sent out on 5.1, don't you think ?

I could hear the play by play, but I had to increase volume settings on left and right speaker. My thought is maybe it was a FOX issue on ch. 105 with the uplink, since the games on ch. 106 for Big10 had the play by play correctly on the center channel. I could be wrong of course with my hypothesis.

It would be interesting to know if the same audio issue occurred for the Big East tournament on a different provider with the 4K. I guess I should have checked the ch. 219 HD feed to see if that was working properly.

Great news! Will these games have HDR and/or Atmos by chance?

Anyone else watching the Fairleigh vs Prairie View game hearing the voice on the audio coming out of the rear left channel?

Yes it's like the announcers are sitting to my left calling the game lol

Same here. If I put my head against my sound bar, I hear them on the left and right speakers. However, if I move back to the couch, it sounds like the announcers are on the left and the crowd is on the right

Yeah, same here ! They keep messing up the 5.1 audio.....just like last week.

BTW I'm not too impressed with this truTV 4K video. I'm smelling a 1080p up conversion to 2160p...... How do you guys see it ?

Users on the dish network forum on "sat guys" are also complaining about the audio

    So it's a broadcast issue

Same here. I think you probably right about it being an upscale job. There’s a very noticeable
from the tournament games that were broadcast last week.

I am wondering if it's an upscale broadcast as well. It does look way better than the HD broadcast though. But does not look as good as tonights Lakers/Bucks game in 4k, or any of the fs1/big east 4k broadcast from last week and def not better than 2016 summer olympics (which was 8k downconverted to 4k). I'm wondering if the studio broadcasts for pregame/postgame/halftime were using 4k cameras or just HD upscaled as well. It is noticeably sharper than the HD broadcast but not that 4k wow factor I usually see/expect. I will say the commercials looked the best that I've ever seen and noticeably sharper than the same commercials on Trutv. Hopefully they fix the audio issue for the rest of the games.

Good to know you guys also see that these are probably not really 4K broadcasts, it's kind of obvious when you compare them to last week's games. It's a real shame Turner or DTV think they can get away with misleading viewers like this.

And DTV has big graphics splashed all over their website for "March Madness in 4K HDR !"... Someone should break the news to their advertising people.

From the Sports Video Group site:

The on-site productions will be done as a 1080p HDR upconvert to 4K, meaning that the production can be integrated with the standard HD production and will not require addition, side-by-side resources. The 4K HDR games will be able to be viewed on DIRECTV.

Hey, thanks for finding this and helping us confirm our suspicion that last night's games were not produced in 4K. DTV should stop advertising them as such.

This is the same thing that happened last fall with Notre Dame college football from NBC. Upconverted 1080p to 4K. Although here it's upconverted 1080p HDR to 4K HDR.

I would guess they don't need a special production truck if they are upconverting a 1080p feed. They do the normal distribution and their studio can convert and uplink separate 1080i and 4K feeds to C band.

This sucks. But nice to know that are our eyes aren't lying to us and that most of us can tell the difference when it's legit 4k and when it's just upconverted HD.
