Yep, the gang here can spot "fake 4K" immediately, ha ha ! Too bad DTV thinks they can get away with this....

And unfortunately, going forward we're going to have to stop assuming an event will be in "real" 4K until we see it for ourselves.

Why blame this on Directv, they can only show what a network provides them. If they were picking up a network's 720p or 1080i and upconverting it themselves and calling it "4K" then you'd have a legitimate gripe.

The upconverted 1080P picture is still clearly superior to the HD version. Give DirectTV credit for providing that alternative.

Yeah, I get that DirecTV is not the one producing the games and doing the 1080p up conversion.

My issue with DTV is that, assuming they know Turner is not producing these games in real 4K HDR, they are still splashing big 4K HDR ads everywhere for these games. Huge headlines and graphics on their website, same on the Channel Guide banners, and in e-mails they send me every other day touting these games in 4K HDR.

So that's just misleading advertising. They can just as easily say these games are in 1080p blu-ray quality and be done with it.

What an amazing month for 4k sports events!!

The programming is delivered to DIRECTV (and other providers) as 4K HDR. Unless one can get the cooperation of all distributors to "admit" that the programs are produced in 1080P HDR no distributor wants to be the one that is advertising "1080p" while the others advertise "4K". And explaining all the technical details is likely to go over most viewers heads.

As long as the distributor isn't doing the upconversion it is "fair" that they receive a 4K HDR feed and deliver a 4K HDR feed. Just like the years where "HD" channels were added where content was produced in "SD" many hours a day. They transmit the feed they receive.

Fair point. Other distributors are probably not going to stop advertising these games in 4K HDR just because DirecTV decided to be intellectually honest and disclose them as 1080p broadcasts.

But DTV does not have to go crazy advertising everywhere in caps "March Madness in STUNNING 4K HDR !" when they really are not. They should reserve those type of bombastic ad campaigns for the events that are truly produced in the format.

Just because they can hide behind the distributors sending out the upconverted signal this way, they do not need to keep perpetuating the lie any higher.

I hear what you are saying, and AT&T wouldn’t typically do that.

Oops...I forgot about the recent 5G E thing they are promoting for 5G technology. Disregard my last statement. :worried:

Now for some "real" 4K: Check out tonight's Thunder/ Raptors NBA game coming from Toronto...

The Canadian broadcaster SN is blowing us away again with another stunning 4K picture. Just wow !

DTV should try to get us all these Raptors 4K games, this is quite a treat !

Maybe there should be a “4Ku” category.

They can still call it "stunning", since the HDR is worth more than the 4K IMHO so between the two that's the one you'd rather have.

They call it "stunning" because the marketing department is writing the copy, not the technical department. :)

Not impressed with the quality on the Celtics/Spurs game at all. Looks absolutely dark using the Spurs broadcast especially compared to the Celtics broadcast.

If I had a choice between the two, I would take 4k over HDR. I remember when directv did games in 4k but not in HDR. It was still very impressive. But these 1080P HDR upscaled games are just okay looking IMO.

Agreed. It did not look good at all. It was very dark although about an hour into the broadcast, they seemed to fix the brightness/color issues. But the resolution was terrible. I am guessing they were not using 4k cameras and it was just an upscaled broadcast. Some of the closeup camera angles looked okay, but the main camera was bad. Also the zoomed out crowd camera that they use during commercials was also blurry and def not 4k like most of the NBA broadcasts. This might have been the worst NBA 4k broadcast I've seen the past 2 years. Not sure what happened. It was barely better than the HD broadcast.

I wouldn't be shocked if TD Garden isn't fully equipped to handle 4K broadcasts so what we got was unconverted 1080p at best most of the time.
