Go to an 720p channel such as ESPN then flip back to the 4K channel. Outside of pausing/pixelating towards the end the 4K broadcast was very good on my end.

Ha thanks I got the hack backwards. Thought it was 1080i source, not 720p

Thanks again to Directv for breaking this and taking away native. If ESPN goes, I might too, after over a decade.

There is truth in there ! Over the last few months we've seen a deterioration in how DTV handles 4K, this morning's screw-up (of not switching to the game) may be the canary in the coal mine:

    1) They've pretty much abandoned updating the 4K schedule on their 4K page so we now have to be guessing what 4K events they'll be carrying based on what OTHER providers have announced.

    2) We're less than 2 weeks away from the first 4K NFL game and just crickets from DTV as to whether they'll be carrying the 4K NFL games. Nothing in the 4K page and no press announcements.

    3) They pushed a new software that besides killing native it also killed 60 fps on 4K events unless we do the song and dance with the original 720p channels. For viewers who don't know this trick the 4K sports are basically unwatchable.

    4) There are no more first-run documentaries or concerts on Ch. 104, ie. BBC nature series, Saturday night concert series. They used to promote these events as big deals and now Ch. 104 has just gone into hibernation.

I'll take a wild guess that as DTV has continued to lose millions of subscribers in the last year they just started cutting back on overhead costs such as the staff in charge of 4K. But I really hope I'm wrong !

I found this paragraph in a story on Sports Video Group.

NFL Network Teams With Fox Sports in Second Year of Thursday Night Football Partnership

Transmission of the productions will be a mixed bag. On Fox, the game will be distributed in 720p, but, on the NFL Network simulcast, the broadcast will be upconverted to 1080i. DirecTV viewers will receive the game in 4K.

I think it is. It will be easy to tell once the Iowa/Iowa St. game starts.

I didn’t think this was true, but I just tried it and it works. Go from a 1080i channel, the frame rate is completely screwed up. Go from a 720p channel, it works like it should.

Lol it is. I was just shocked the game was in HDR. Directv 4K sports gap is shrinking

ISU/Iowa orders of magnitude better than NBC 4K so it’s pretty obvious that NBC is upconverting 1080p and adding in HLG HDR...

Is the DirecTv 4K sports gap really closing when there really hasn't been that much out there? Is it not a case of the others catching up while D* has been standing still since there's nothing new to offer? If we could get F1 in 4K then that's progress but it's not happening-anytime soon.

I agree DirecTV is still the 4k leader but there is not as much 4k content out there

I watched part of the ISU/UofIA game - totally forgetting about the 720p channel->4K channel hack that was needed. Was frustrated with the pixelation/ghosting and pointed it out to my wife who HAD thought it was a great picture. At least I can go home tonight and explain the issue - and look forward to NFL in 4K (eventually).

FWIW - I DM'd D* on FB and Twitter as well as publicly tweeting them about this issue. Will let y'll know if I hear anything back.

I discussed this with them via DM on Twitter last week and explained in detail what was happening. I suggested that perhaps their Engineering dept. was not testing in the same environment as the rest of us.
If they haven’t got the message by now...

    Never mind
