I downgraded to this service yesterday. My channel list is a little bit better than the one listed here. I get cartoon network and hallmark movie channel. Since the essentials are not a basic package you will have to pay $5 for the reciever rental.

Do you also get Boomerang? I have DishFamily as all the wife and I watch are locals in HD and the kids LOVE Boomerang. They miss Cartoon Netowrk but to get both Boomerang (a MUST) and Cartoon Network takes the AT250 package. If this Essentials had them both for $15/month what a deal.

If you check channel 102, it lists what is in Free Preview and 127, 130, 131, 158, & 185 are shown as available through 27-Feb. Chances are you'll lose Hallmark on the 28th??

Can you clarify the $5 rental? I *think* you are saying that the 1st (Primary) receiver rental fee used to be included with ATxxx but now you will have to pay $5/month on it like you would for any additional receiver on the account - is that right?

They're both are the same. Boomerang used to be good. Now it's edgy.

BTW - They are not the same. Boomerang is a Cartoon Network seperate channel that has mostly older shows (ones when we were growing up like Superfriends, Wacky Races, Flintstones, etc) and I think a lot better for kids. The Cartoon Network channel is much more edgy as it shows current cartoons which seem to rely on kids being foulmouthed and aggressive most of the time. The only shows I let my kids watch on Cartoon Network (at the grandparents house) are Pokemon and Goosebumps.

Is this someones idea of a sick joke I've called the 1-888-773-2162 number and get the Indian call center who twice have claimed there is no "Essential Service" only the HD package. I tried the 1-800-333-3474 number and chose tech support to get an English speaking rep. and got the same results. How many have gotten a positive answer on this "SERVICE"?

This plan actually is exactly what my family needs (minus Animal Planet and Cartoon Network) so I decided to check it out. Online CSR states it is only for members who have financial hardship and can not afford another package. I also called the CSR number and was told that it is their LOWEST service (guess my Family package is an upgrade) and that anyone could order it but you had to do it via the telephone. No way to do it online. I was about to pull the trigger but figured I better talk to the wife first. Wonder if it will be that easy next time around.

As a follow up I finally got an Indian that knew something. He transferred me back to the states to an "ACCOUNT SPECIALIST" they are the only ones that can offer the package. It is a 1 time offer and does act as a basic package to replace the monthly fees($5).

Boomerang used to air Merry Melodies, Little Lulu, Popye and stuff like that. Cartoon net is way over the top for me.. I was sixty years old yesterday. Officially I'm an old geezer:)

According to the account specialist I finally got to talk to yesterday the correct price is $9.99/Mo. it can only be chosen once per account if you move up to say Family you can't go back down. It is supposed to be a final retention tool but from the way it was discovered it seems to be coming into more mainstream usage.

I called back and ordered the "ESSENTIAL SERVICE" today the only programming option is local channels. No other ala carte is allowed, but there is no commitment with owned equipment, and the 2 month first payment applies.

As an aside I was signing up with an old 7100 DISH PLAYER I was given by an old landlord. Programming wouldn't come up so I ended up with advanced Tech Support who determined that the receiver had an internal failure. I was offered DHPP replacement for $5.99 and they would replace it with an owned 501 receiver. I jumped on it seeing I wanted a 501/508 for the no recording fee DVR and Ebay has been in the $80-100 range.

Darn, I was hoping for the one cent Cinemax for my neighbor. :D I mounted a 300 to go with his DirecTV dish and a SW42 to a spare 501, but we haven't yet activated service. I may try him out with a 942 and no DISH subscription - just OTA locals with no guide info for $0/month.

Good information. My mom has basic Comcast service, this may be a better deal.

I was told once that the essentials pack could only be added once and for only six months?

Iwas told it could only be added once but you can keep it as long as you want, but if you change you can't go back. Right now I am getting programming that isn't supposed to be in freeview mode and isn't listed as part of the package, for $9.99 I'm not arguing about the contents.:) :) :)
