Well, I've already got a large number of various projects sitting around that I
want to finish but never have time to.

Thus it doesn't seem to hurt much to add to the list:

Tom's Hardware described the Do It Yourself (DIY) Digital Projector.

    http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20041201/index.html (followup)

The idea got me looking around, and I discovered folks have been doing this
    for awhile now.

The overhead projector route is ok, but one can actually make a much better
    enclosed unit as well.

DIYAudio.com has a forum dedicated to it:

From what I've read, one of the better designs is for sale here:

So, has anyone tried doing this? Spending $200 or so for a projector that is of pretty good quality isn't all that bad, especially if the only thing you'll hook up to it is a computer.

Neat idea, but how do I hang it from the ceiling as I do with my current projector? :D The only thing that I did as a DIY project in my system is the screen. Right now I have a sheet of white plastic that I am using as a screen. I am eventually going to order some "Goo" paint to paint the screen to give increased output, not that it is really needed as my X1 blows away the old CRT projector that I had years ago.

After checking out some of the designs on the diyaudio website, not all of them are so clumsy that you couldn't hang them from the ceiling. Indeed, some of the DIY projectors are fabulously designed.

Check out this example. I think you have to be registered to view the picts, but I posted a picture of the partially completed version. You can see its not all that large:

Obviously DIY projects have their own limitations (little in the way of advanced features such as keystoning, etc), but some of them are definately bargains compared to commercial brands and have equivalent video quality.

Gee, I have a slide projector that a dead beat left in a mini storage unit a while back. Maybe I could turn it into a video projector. :D

The part I would worry most about on one of the DIY projects would be taking the moniters apart so that it wouldnt damage the LCD screen. I wish I could just buy the screens already apart so that would be one less thing to go wrong while doing the project.
