Do you have the protection plan?

    I don't think anyone can really answer this.

    IMHO if you report a problem that requires moving the dish to fix the PP would cover it. If you simply call and ask for the dish to be moved they would not do it.

    If you don't have one call within a year, or one call with 5 years, or one call within 10 years it's money down the toilet.

    No it's not like health, car, etc, insurance. A bad LNB or receiver it's going to cost your $20,000 like a new car would or thousands of dollars for health problem expenses.

    I would be happy covering the costs($80) myself that one time I'd need it.

    Question for the experts: does DirecTV respond any more quickly when you have the PP?

    For example, let's say my dish gets blown out of alignment. I'm not going on that third story roof, and even if I was willing to do it, my wife wouldn't let me. So I have to have a service call.

    Does the installer get to my house any faster if I have the protection plan? THAT would definitely be worth the cost.

    I can say for a fact that they do not get there any faster with the Protection Plan. Depending on how busy a particular area is and how many techs the home office has at the time, D*s scheduling program works on a first call, first serve basis. All calls are scheduled at least 24hrs in advance sometimes out to almost 7 days. As each slot (time frame) fills up orders get pushed back further. The protection plan does not affect this.

    That is not considered a dish alignment, but a dish relocation. I believe D* charges around $100.00 for this.
    You may contact a local sat contractor and bypass DTV but he will still want to charge something for running the wire and maybe even burying it. Also, is this a 5 LNB dish or the triple sat?

    Yes. Have it and used it.

    In addition, I have homeowner's insurance, car insurance, life insurance, and health insurance.

    I also have another form of protection I use regularly, but that's not a discussion for this board. ;)

    I've had the protection plan for about 10 months.

    Used it once to replace HR20 with a dead OTA tuner, used it a second time for dish adjustment after the D10 launch.

    I figure I'm well ahead of the cost game at the moment.

    Have it and used it once so far has paid for itself on that call and in piece of mind.

    I have the PP as well.

    DirecTV seems to be all over the map. From another thread, I thought the T&Cs for the PP exclude 'acts of God'? In that case why would they cover replacement due to lightning strike.?.?

    Good peace of mind to me. Had an owned HR10-250 replaced with an HR20, and have had a couple remotes replaced, backlit RF remotes.

    In my estimation it's probably because they can't easily prove if it was due to lightning or a power spike and instead of playing the "he said she said" game they just fix it.

    Looks like a 2-1 majority have the protection plan.

    I never used to buy into the 'extended warranty scam' as I saw it in my younger days. But my last two major purchases (HDTV and an SUV) I have opted in for the 'peace of mind extended warranty'. Maybe getting old is changing my perspective ;)

    I was leaning towards getting the PP even as I submitted this survey, and now I'm pretty sure I'll do it -- just need to sleep on it before I decide for sure.

    IMO a waste of money. If D* won't fix what ever the problem is to keep getting an annuity from me, then I don't need them.

    If my equipment breaks I'll pay a shipping charge but thats it, I am paying for a service if they want my money they need to fix their box, I don't own it.

    If the dish get out of alignment D* will fix it or I will dump them, I won't pay a fee to fix their delivery system. Regardless there are so many issues with how their installers don't do the job right I can call them on the carpet and make them fix it. If they refuse then they don't need me as a customer. I wouldn't pay a cable company or phone company to fix their distribution system why would I pay them to fix their dish or the cable they installed.

    Sounds like D* found a good revinue stream from lemmings.

    just voted yes.

    I'm under the impression that I'll get quicker service, attention, and less out of packet money (if any) for things like a replacement box or dish alignment versus someone without the plan. But I could be completely wrong too! I've never had to use the plan.

    Nope, no inside wire protection service here. Trust me, I understand very very well how telcos/service providers create revenue.

    Next day service, never out of warranty, no shipping cost and I paid more for mine than a lot of people.

    This thing has a hard drive, I have had a lot of dead drives in my household.

    Could be a waste of money if you never use it. It is just like any other insurance, it stinks until you need it.

    Execpt if you don't pay your insurance bill and your house burns down you are SOL, if your dish goes wonkey and you don't have the service plan, you just tell D* fine I will get cable if you don't fix it and they will fix it.
