The math is more complicated than presented. ESPN's rates go up each year so look at it as ESPN going from 88 million at $8 per month to 86 million at $9 per month. Which is a $70 million increase in revenue. (Going from $8 each for 88 million to $8.19 each for 86 million is close to "break even" revenue.) ESPN+ is gravy. :)

ESPN's investment is a drop in a bucket compared to Neflix's growing negative cash flow. But I suppose we are expected to excuse Netflix's financials while condemning all others? :)

AND if ESPN goes standalone steaming they still have to offer it to local OTA channels for free in the teams areas.

If the NFL wanted, when their rights are renegotiated they could have an exclusive contract with ESPN and not carry any games on OTA. I'm sure they won't do that because they'd lose fans by making it harder to see the games, but it would be totally within their power to do so.

What device were you using the DTV Now app on? It's generally quick and stable on Apple TV. I've read it works less well on Roku.

At any rate, having a dedicated hardware box, the C71 box that's currently being beta tested, should definitely help AT&T deliver a more reliable service to folks using that box since it gives them a single piece of hardware to optimize delivery and support for.

Does the AppleTV app have 15- or 30-second skip? That was one of the things that drove me to Roku. You could at least see video while fast-forwarding with AppleTV (which you can or couldn't with Roku), but you had to fast forward through commercials with no skip-back.

Yes, the ATVs have a 10 second skip forward and backward. They're built into the touchpad on its corners/edges.
