I tried the reboot from menu and verified that it reformatted 3 times out of 5. I just shipped my Seagate 1.5 TB and Ultra enclosure (package deal) back to Tiger Direct for a refund. It "NEVER" reformatted when pulling power cord. Note: I called D* for price of D22, same as Best Buy $199. Costco is $169. No word on H23 yet. Since my Seagate/Ultra cost $185 with shipping and tax. I will probably just buy the H22 or H23. Less hassle.

    HR21-100 + Cavalry 1TB eSATA.

I have menu reset this DVR (as well as my HR20-700 + FAP750) almost every week for the last year for CE updates, and have never had a hiccup, and never lost a recording.

If this is happening every time for someone, something is seriously wrong with the DVR or eSATA drive, there is a bad connection, or there is a serious incompatibility problem.

There are many, many people on this forum with an HR21-100 + eSATA.

This was my experience as well... every time I rebooted my recordings got lost. I finally gave up and installed the seagate barracuda 1TB drive internally. All worked great until the latest software update. From that day on, the 1TB drive fails to work. I had to swap in the old drive to even get the DVR running. Even got DTV to send me a new unit, but the F#$@ers gave me another 21-100. I formatted my 1 TB drive and tried another internal install on the "NEW" hr21-100, and exactly the same thing happened. It gives me an error message saying there's a problem with the internal drive. I'm going to try one last time by doing a low level reformat to map out any bad sectors (If I can figure out how to do that). Saw in another thread where that may work. Also may borrow a different brand drive to see if that solves the problem.

BTW I am/was using an Antec MX-1 with a SIIG eSATA cable with no luck as an external... I originally blamed it on the seagate, but think the HR21-100s are really to blame. Too many people on this thread alone talking about the same issues of reformatting to be a coincidence.

I have found that sometimes when the download occurs it writes it to the alternate partition which sometimes contains a bad sector. This causes all kinds of problems.

I have run SpinRite to take out those bad sectors and then everything worked great for a while but if you are having one bad sector you will probably experience more down the road.

You could download software again to overlay what has been already downloaded. PM me if you won't to know how I think you can resolve this as I can't discuss it publicly here in the thread.

I had problems similar to those of the OP. Stuttering on recorded shows. A reboot would fix things for awhile, but the problems would return. I decided to replace my eSATA (750 GB with a 1.5TB).

I was going to transfer the recordings, but at the last minute decided not to. I was afraid the problem might transfer along with my recordings (a DB problem?).

So, I just started fresh with the new drive and it's working great!

Anybody else confirm that the HR21-100 has a software bug that causes is to reformat the external (or internal if that is even possible) drives?

Are external drives this problematic with d* or just certain models?

I think that it is more problematic with certain models than others. I have mine on an HR21-700 and I have had ZERO problems.

HR21-100; Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB; "noname" enclosure but with 3.0 MB/sec transfer enabled.

Drive is reformatting with each reboot-- well, at least 3 times. Once after a power outage, once after downloading a CE, and once after a freeze-up during replay from DVR.

Also running a 500 MB Seagate Free Agent Pro on an HR20-600 for more than one year with no problems at all.

After reading these threads about glitches in eSATA drives I find myself wondering something.

What is ratio of issues with drives ≥1TB vs drives <1TB?

I have a 750GB drive and haven't had one issue in since it was installed last spring.

I was thinking about adding a 1TB to my daughters HR20 but now I'm hesitant.

Mike, don't be Hesitant, have No Fear. I have a 1TB External Drive on my HR21-700 with No Problems. I also have a 1TB Internal Drive on my other HR21-700 with No Problems. I also have a 1TB Internal Drive on my HR20-700 with No Problems.

I think there were a batch of HR20s that seemed to have more problems than others with large drives and new software releases.

I also experienced a Slowing Down of my HR21-700 with an AM21 unit with the External Drive but then downloaded the CE Software and I was back up to speed so I think it was just a problem with a Corrupted Download of the Software which I think I proved to myself when I downloaded the CE and it worked just fine.

In fact, it worked as Fast as the day I bought it when it had very little to do as far as keeping the CPY busy.
