Thank you "RSSDOG" for all the tips to add extra capacity to my HR-21.
After months of tiral and error with DirTv & Best Buy; I finally chose to buy Nextar3 esata enclosure with a WD-1TB sata drive and am up and running.
Used esata connection (both ends), started the external drive and then powered the HR21. HR-21 went through some self diagnostics, formated the drive, loaded the channel guides and got 100% free space to use. Didn't need to use the disk that came with the external box.:)
    I bought a 1T & 1.5T Seagate expansion drive (it didn't work); Toshiba 1TB esata (didn't work); Hitachi 1TB esata (didn't work);

Great write-up !! Question: If I plug in an eSata drive in my HR20, does the INTERNAL drive continue to "spin"? I'd hope that it would not - to eliminate the noise if for nothing else. Thanks

Can you be specific which make/model you purchased? Also, where did you find it and for how much?? Thanks so much

OK, so I've been reading through this long thread and need to cut to the chase. My fear is that some of the information may be outdated and I REALLY don't want to just order something over the internet to have to return it... So let me ask you wise people:

I have an HR20-700 -- Which EXTERNAL eSata 1TB drive seems to work out of the box for this?

And my other question from above (so it doesn't get buried) : Does the Internal drive still "spin" after plugging in an eSata external drive??

    Thanks so much ...

Internal still spins, the most reliable current solution is an MX-1 enclosure using a WD EVDS model....the EVDS line is/has replaced the EADS line...

Thanks for the info ... Is the MX-1 EADS an EXTERNAL drive? I was leaning towards an EXTERNAL drive as I don't want to invalidate anything by opening up the DVR.

edit: never mind - google is my friend...

OK, 1 last question (I hope) ... Does the Operating System that controls the HR20 reside on the actual internal spinning drive? What I'm getting at is if I buy and install an eSata external drive and the Internal drive FAILS, I'm assuning the whole thing is DEAD, right? At that point I'd have to purchase/install a replacement Internal drive anyway, correct? If that is true, an External eSata drive is only providing a Larger storage space for my recordings - nothing more, nothing less. Do I see this correctly?

    No. Absolutely incorrect.

Posted everywhere - external will shut using internal.

... except that the Internal still spins .... hence I was just question the OS part of it .... Is there a specific link that explains everything-eSata?

I apologize if I'm asking too many questions - this eSata thing is al new to me. I just want to BE SURE of what I can expect before spending the money.

    thanks for the wisdom!

The OS does not reside on the drive, its on chips....so if the internal drive completely fails the box will still run on the the external.

    It's eSATA.
And why you still thinking of OS as it reside on internal drive, if you know DVR completely stop using internal drive after an external connected ?
Rotating/spins of internal disk is irrelevant for the question about OS.

I have been using a 1TB external HDD for more than a year now ... and it's not enough space anymore!

    a) Sounds like 2TB eHDD's are now being used successfully? Anyone have a suggestion for a good (cheap as possible) 2TB replacement for me?

    b) Is there any way to get the recorded programming from my current drive over to the new drive? (I have honestly searched for an answer, but can't fine one!)

    Thanks!

I've been trying to connect my WD My Book Home WD10000H1CS-00 (1GB) to my Direct TV HR20-100 with no success. After unplugging the HR20-100 for about 20 minutes and then connecting the eSata WD My Book external drive, I then powered the WD drive up first and allowing it to spin up for a minute or two, then plugged the power to the HR20 back in and waited. Eventually the HR20 auto resets and reboots and the WD My Book light winked like it was doing something every few minutes during this process but when I go back to the DVR menu the external drive doesn't show to have replaced the internal drive. The WD drive light is still on but nothing appears to have changed.

I have read that many WD external drives are "Glitchy" and I am wondering if this could be my problem. Currently being unemployed cash is tight and returning the My Book to Fry's is no longer an option. Many of the posts I have read refer to the Antec MX-1 enclosure and they are available locally.

    Question 1
Is there something I forgot to do or overlooked in hooking up my current external drive? I took it out of the box and plugged it in. The Cable was tight and plugged in correctly

    Question 2
If I purchase a Antec MX-1 will a WD 1.5TB bare drive work with this unit and my HR20 or should I stick with recommended 1 TB WD internal drive which Fry's currently doesn't have in stock?

    Question 3
Although not a very attractive option, could I take apart my brand new 1GB WD My Book and use its hard drive for the Antec MX-1? This would be my cheapest route to a workable solution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    1)
My Books are not supported....if you want to use an off the shelf solution from WD you HAVE to use their My DVR Expander series......

    2) Works beautifully.

    3)Also should work.

I had a seagate FAP 750 that quit working last year......the yellow light on it still came on...... but after numerous reboot attempts, i gave up

recently, I bought a 1 TB WD DVR Expander. Just for the heck of it I plugged in the power supply from the new WD into the FAP..........it works! :)

Now, where and what kind of power supply do I buy for the WD.....I'll use on my other hr20-700

sorry, if this is wrong thread to post this question.......

    thx, lance
