    It looks great. Very clean.

It's also a great job conveying the info and making it look different from the other first looks.

I thought of it, but that is more a question of HR21 functionality. I didn't want to complicate the document with things it won't do. However, if Earl thinks we should address it in the first look, I will. :)

    Dripping...
IMHO I think it should be mentioned wherever. I say that because someone over at the other site was asking if the AM21 allows for more then 2 concurrent recordings.

I need you to add copywrite notice to the last page.

Snag the wording from the end of the HR21-100 review

Nice work guys. This has been a real great experience. I also agree it should say it works on all the HR21's.

Note will be added to the final version stating: The AM21 does NOT increase the number of concurrent recordings possible with the HR21.

Great job on the First Look!

I have a few comments and questions ...

    • This first question may be dumb, but I didn't think there were distinctions between AM21 models, and my model has no label or sticker saying it's an AM21-700. It's also not in the AM21 manual ... so should this be a first look at the AM21-700 or a first look at the AM21?
    • Last sentence, first paragraph: "DBSTalk.Com" - the uppercase "C" looks odd. Same in the page-footers and final paragraph, under "Credits". I don't know what recommended usage is for internet sites, but maybe the "C" should be lowercase?
    • "Color: Glossy Black" should be split or reworded: "Finish & Color: Glossy Black" or "Color: Black", "Finish: Glossy"
    • The watermarks in the photos on page 2 should probably be over the equipment instead of at the top of the photos ... It would be easy for someone to grab the photos and crop out the watermark.
    • The semi-colon in the following paragraph should be a comma: "To interpret the ATSC digitally modulated input signals (8VSB); the AM21 uses two ATI Theater 311 IC chips to output an MPEG compliant transport stream."
    • Fixes needed in the following paragraph, suggested insertions in blue, and the comma in the last sentence (in red) should be deleted: "Setup is extremely straightforward. Disconnect the power from the HR21. Connect the USB cable between the AM21 and the HR21, connect the power cord coming out of the AM21 to the HR21, and connect the OTA antenna cable to the AM21. Once all connections are in place, connect the power cable removed from the HR21 to the AM21. The HR21 HD DVR will reboot, normally and then the process of setting up the antenna via software can begin."
    • The following paragraph says go to channel 2 to see the OTA channels, but is that appropriate for all users? Instead, what about suggesting to go to Edit Off-Air Channels to see what was found, and to also edit and view signal strengths? "When you are done with Setup, press GUIDE and go to channel 2 to see if your off-air locals are now in the guide. They will have channel numbers like 2-1, 2-2, 4-1, etc."
    • Again, call me stupid, but I was not aware that HD-Access fee was required for viewing OTA channels with the AM21! "Note: You MUST subscribe to HD Access in order for the AM21 Off-Air Tuner to function." Is this same requirement true for the HR20 receivers to see OTA? If so, maybe the sentence could be reworded so as not to imply it's the AM21 that requires HD Access subscription, but instead it's a general requirement for OTA. If this is unique to the AM21, maybe a phrase could be added to state that ...
    • Under "Observations", the "1)" is not bolded, but "2)" is.
    • Add a note that these observations were made while watching an OTA channel. Otherwise, the on-screen message about the OTA tuner being removed is not displayed.
    • I agree with earlier comments that a mention should be made that adding the AM21 does not increase the number of tuners available for simultaneous recording. This will be a question that newbies will ask.
    • There is no mention of availability or cost. I know we can't answer those questions, but maybe simply stating this fact will forestall some questions.

Hope you don't think I'm being too picky ... this was really an excellent write-up!!!!

    I added follow-up comments below yours ...

The unit is an AM21-700, and to be consistent with other first looks, it is identified as such. There may be future AM21s manufactured by someone other than Pace.
Can you point to any posts or other references that this is an AM21-700? I just don't recall any discussion on this and it's confusing me ...

"Glossy Black" was the terminology used in the first look for the HR21-700. (co-authored by you, incidentally. [IMG] )
Well, I only formatted the HR21-700 First Look, I didn't co-author it. :) It's described in that first look as "Piano-black glossy case cover", so the cover is being described. That contrasts a little with the AM21 first look, where color is separated out into a list of attributes. For that reason, I was just suggesting that "finish" be added as its own attribute, but it's all good.

Possibly, however, I put them where they are so as to not obscure the details of the circuit boards for those who want to see them clearly. My watermarking program is also limited in placement options.
There are no circuit boards in the photos on page 2 - these are the exterior shots.

Actually, I had a comma there and Microsoft Word said it should be a semi-colon. [IMG]
I have learned not to always rely on Word - it can be wrong. Semicolons are used to separate independent clauses or as super-commas, but in this case, the first part is not an independent clause on its own: "To interpret the ATSC digitally modulated input signals (8VSB);"

Words were taken verbatim from the AM21 pre-release user's guide. From the AM-21 pre-release user's guide: "The user must subscribe to HD Access in order for the AM21 off-air tuner to function."
OK, but is that different from use of OTA on the HR20?

Actually, the introduction includes the phrase "has bee released to the public." Cost is not known, only speculated, so was not mentioned.
That sentence refers to the "solution" being released. What about the actual product? That's what I'm referring to. I suggest adding a sentence at the end that release dates for the AM21 are not known at this time.

I am not going to turn this into a "contest."

The invitation from Earl to join this field trial referred to it as an "AM21-700." In addition, mine has a sticker on the bottom that includes the Pace Electronics logo in the upper right. Furthermore, the circuit board in at least two of Earl's internal shots is clearly labeled "Pace."

The watermarking is where it is. I am not changing it unless Earl or DIRECTV wants it changed.

I have no idea if the rules are different for the HR20 - The statement was in the manual, so it is in the first look.

The "solution" being released IS the AM21.

If it's made by Pace, which it is, it's a -700 by default.

Do we really need to argue over such small details?

Good, because it's not, and I rather resent the implication on my motives. I only intend to offer constructive criticism to make the first look clear, accurate and the best it can be. It's what I do for the CE process in general and for the field trials, and I'm sorry if you took my replies to be anything other than in the spirit in which I intended them.

Thank you, at least now I know what you're basing it on, for as I mentioned, I have seen no discussion on a specific model number since the AM21 trials opened.

The solution indeed is the AM21, and the solution premiered at CES2008. Again, I'm suggesting a comment on the availability of the solution ... when the actual product will be released. Leaving out the comment is fine - we'll have faced questions on the product availabilty either way.

Again, you did a great job on the AM21 first look.
