So, I saw that I'm eligible for a free equipment upgrade. This of course shackles me to another two year contract. I don't mind that because I'm happy with DirecTV, but what I wanted to do is change my Genie mini client and upgrade it to an HD DVR, so that I would have my main Genie plus a DVR.....total of 7 tuners, and the ability to see recordings made on the new DVR on the main Genie.

However, the Agent informed me that the recordings on the new DVR would not be visible to the Genie, even though I'm paying a $3 monthly fee for whole home DVR? All that Whole Home DVR does is allow the mini to see the recordings on the main Genie? So therefore, I can't add any DVR to my main Genie and have it see the recordings that the DVR has made? D* also doesn't allow a second Genie, so I'm limited to 5 tuners, or 7 tuners if I add a DVR, but the recordings on the new DVR are only accessible on the DVR that recorded them? What kind of business model is that!?

The "Agent" is wrong. You can see recordings from the new DVR on any other receivers/DVR's/Genies/minis on the SWM network.

She said that the Genie was only compatible with Genie clients?

I have a Genie HR44-500, plus a DVR HR24. Recordings from either are viewable on either. Have had this setup for years. You'll be OK.

Good to know. The free DVR they are offering is a Tivo. Would that make a difference?

The Tivo that D* offers will NOT work using whole home - Only the HDDVR's or HD receivers or mini's will work using whole home-

She likely has her facts backwards. Genie clients are only compatible with Genies (meaning that clients only work if there is a Genie in the system). Genies work fine with other DVR's. The Genie clients can then see content from other (non-Tivo) DVR's, through the Genie to which the client is connected.

post edited to indicate that Tivo DVR's do not work in a whole home system.

I wasn't thinking Tivo DVR. That definitely makes a difference. You don't want a Tivo DVR for your purposes. You want a "regular" DirecTV HD DVR.

That is true if you got the new HS 17 Genie.

I do think this CSR does not know what she is doing. There is a person on here trying to get a THR22 Tivo and he is told that they do not have them.

Well, the free offer specified a Tivo, so they do have them. I persuaded them to change the Tivo for a regular HD DVR and all is now well. They are coming out tomorrow free of charge to install it. :)

Why would anybody want one of their very outdated TIVO DVR's?

I think that's why they've reserved them for the 'free' upgrade. :)To me, the upgrade is worth it because I replace a Genie client in a bedroom with a DVR that gives me additional recording capability. I just had to persuade them to give me a non Tivo DVR.

Between the ads running more often, and these reports of free Tivo DVRs being offered but not DirecTV DVRs I'm thinking they are trying to offload the rest of what they have in stock.

I'd wait and get an hs17. Gets you your seven tuners and more.

My 75 year old mom loves her THR22 as that's the only interface she's liked/known since her first DVR...the HDVR2. DirecTV branded DVR's weren't invented at that time. She hates my 81 year old dad's HR24-500 because it's a different interface from the TiVo. I'm not about to argue with her because she brought me into this world. I gave her my owned THR22 after beta testing, and tossed in a 2TB drive. At least it provides HD channels that she wants, plus it scans the AM21 for ALL OTA channels unlike the HR series. She doesn't stream since she has the crappy AT&T DSL in her area.

So yes, there is still a little bit of a market out there. :)
