I used to be excited about the free previews because I could look ahead and record movies to my dvr. Since I went away and came back things seem to have changed. I've gone from an aging HR20, to nothing, to the new Genie setup and I'm not all that happy.

When I try to look ahead in the guide and record a movie on a premium station, that will be free to watch when it's recorded, I get a message that says "No way you can do this dude. You have to be a subscriber." I'm going to be gone all weekend, so I guess I'm just out of luck.

I am curious though about the other shoe dropping. Had I been able to record a free preview movie, would I have been able to watch it outside the free preview time period, or is that locked out now too?

I am running an HR24 and the message I get says I am not authorized , do you want to record it anyway. Or something similar.
When the time comes the channel is live and the program / movie does record.
I have the Movie "Criminal" recorded that came from Cinemax that I do not subscribe to. It was recorded 11/18/17 and it still plays.

Have you tried, when you are away, to use the internet ? Log into your account, load the Guide and choose what you want to record. It works.

Just tried it. I have a Genie 2 running the 0xfba client. The message gives me a choice between "subscribe now' or "no thanks." Choosing "no thanks" does not schedule the recording.

Thanks for the tip. I'm loading up now and hoping I'll be able to watch what I've recorded next week. (I'm hoping we're still living in the 1984 "time shifting" paradigm of U.S. law.)
