    Sacramento, CA area: $3.90.

Without location, prices are almost meaningless.

I'm glad I am not in northern Indiana! One station has dropped to $3.59 here but $3.6x is more common

In the grand scheme of things, 34mpg is nothing to brag about. They have engines that get up to 60mpg that the Govt. won't allow to be manufactured cause they're in bed with big oil................

Who is "they"? AFAIK, auto manufacturers have no interest in building more efficient vehicles as this will cost a lot in R&D.

Over the years, most of the conspiracy reports of hign milage engines and carburators that "they" don't want us to have or even know about were actually of well known technologies that produce too much pollution. The internal combustion engine has an efficiency of 25 to 30%. It isn't too hard to top that.

There's high interest in Detroit, Tokyo, Stuttgart, etc. to build efficient cars. Sure, it'd be nice for them to have everything powered by one 400hp 15-mpg engine that was R and D'ed 50 years ago, but that's not reality.

So explain to me how the government won't allow these 60mpg engines to be built when I had one back in 1981 (would get 63mpg on the highway if I didn't go over 60)? And the Chevy Volt averages 60mpg (37 gas, 93 electric) to say nothing of diesels that get into the 50s that can go 60+ on the highway if you're careful.

I remember renting a Honda Civic stratified charge engine back in the late 1970s that not onlly got 50+ MOG on the highway, it met the 1975 EPA pollution mandates for cabon monoxide and hydrogen sulkdife emissions while using leaded gas with no catalytic converter..
