Gas is now $1.45 a gallon today.

Gas in South Carolina where a relative of mine lives is commonly $1.38/gal. According to a CPI calculator, that would be like me paying $.24/gal in 1971 when I bought my first car. The least I paid that year I think was $.32/gal, and that was uncommon.
I grew up living behind a Shell station (they owned our driveway and half of our back yard) and during a brief "gas war" in 1964, they bottomed out at $.24/gal, but $1.38 today converts to $.18/gal in 1964. It's like we've brought back the five cent cigar.
$1.35 here in central IL. With federal & state taxes near 60 cent a gallon, they are really selling their gas for 75 cents!
I feel like a sucker again. I filled up at $1.67/gallon last night, which is the least I've paid since who knows when, and I drive by the same gas station this morning and the sign says $1.57/gallon
Don't feel that way.
It might be lower again tomorrow since oil is going down again today.
I've started using high test gas in my Caddie again. Not sure I see any difference, but the Cadillac mechanic I know looked askance at me when I told him I had been running it on regular. I think I paid $1.97, credit, yesterday.

Cadillac owners are supposed to use high test, whether their engine compression ratio warrants it or not. It is a badge of honor.
Yeah, I know, but the cost of high test for a while was pretty high and the manual says I can use any gas in it. Never heard one ping when using regular. Just hate to be looked at like that Caddie mechanic looked at me when I told him I was running regular in it.
These low prices aren't actually good for the economy. It's seen as a deflationary sign.

The motors are designed with a specific grade of gasoline to run in them. Switching back and forth causes the ECU / ECM to have to change a lot of settings to burn the different gas. If the book says run the 87 then do that.
My son's S-10 with a high performance V6 will turn on the check engine light in a few blocks of driving if you put 87 octane in it and it will rattle / ping. Run that out and put in the 89 and in a couple of miles the check engine light will go off again and not return.
I don't run anything except Shell or Chevron.
Also, every 3,000 miles put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas to clean out the gum that ethanol gas deposits on them and you can feel the difference with clean fuel injectors.
Headed back up here. One station went from 1.56 this morning to 1.79 this afternoon. Station across the street was still at 1.56, but I don't see that lasting long.
Is that attributable to any newsworthy world event? I know that OPEC confabbed a week ago, but realistically, there are just too many sellers who are financially desperate to allow a cartel to significantly reduce current production... or to even put a dent in it.
Crude oil per barrel went up 12% Friday.
My stocks came up 8.5%.
Gas at Chevron and Shell and Exxon was $1.39 yesterday. I have not been out today.
No increases here, beginning of the week $1.49 was average and the best was about $1.47 Yesterday I filled up for $1.39 and now today 2 or 3 stations are $1.39 and the average is down to $1.47

People don't realize just how high our gas is versus everyone else. Part is our taxes. But part in the summer is our special blend. With that said it should be the blend used 365 and by every state. Then it'd be cheaper and better for the environment.
That depends upon how much more expensive diesel is and how much better mileage one gets.
In California diesel is now a bit cheaper than regular gas. That may change in a few days when California switches to "summer blend" gas, which is more expensive than the "winter blend."
My old truck (3.5L Ecoboost) got around 13 MPG. My foot was just too heavy to get the 18-20 MPG that is advertised, even my CC was too heavy. Paying about 50 cents more per gallon for non-ethanol gas upped my MPG by 1.5-2, and when gas was $3.5 plus it was close to breakeven. But at $2.50 or lower it was not. My new truck (6.7L diesel) gets 18-20 around town and 24+ on a flat road with CC set at 75. Right now diesel is running about 20-30 cents more than unleaded. So yes it is cheaper to operate. Of course it is not so cheap as to over come the extra $9,000 the diesel engine cost, but I will get that back in the higher resale value of the truck.
