Gas in South Carolina where a relative of mine lives is commonly $1.38/gal. According to a CPI calculator, that would be like me paying $.24/gal in 1971 when I bought my first car. The least I paid that year I think was $.32/gal, and that was uncommon. I grew up living behind a Shell station (they owned our driveway and half of our back yard) and during a brief "gas war" in 1964, they bottomed out at $.24/gal, but $1.38 today converts to $.18/gal in 1964. It's like we've brought back the five cent cigar.
