I love my Genie also. I've had several HD DVRs (HR34-700, HR24-500, HR22-100, ect.). My HR 44-200 beats them all.

Love my Genie. You really need two Genies to prevent recording conflicts with a family all recording their own shows.

Love the Genie! It's great to see 5 or more recordings in the list at the same time with all the HRs.

I had to endure a weekend in a uVerse home. uuugggghh!

Not for me. I'd much rather watch full screen, with copious use of FF between plays, ads, talking heads, etc. I can watch three to four full games in the time it takes to watch one. Of course, they are all recorded. And I never miss a play because I am focussing on the other screen.

    My HR44 Genie is great!
The HR34 however is another story. It only responds to the remote when it feels like it. I keep threatening to take it out in the driveway and smash it with a hammer but so far that hasn't helped.

    HR34 B+ (I would probably give the HR44 an A- if I had one.)

    I'd give the Genie Mini a B-.

:icon_band I love my brand new HR44-700 working with my networked HR24-200/500 and genie go 2! (somewhat puzzled why not JINNI ?)
I have missed the Picture-In-Picture feature and enjoy that again!

I love my Genie. The thing I like the most is the extra tuners and disc space would be a short second. Tuners are what I needed and this box has been great. I did have the HDMI port go in in the first one I had (February 2013) but since its been pretty good. I do think sometimes its a bit slow but given there is usually alot going on, I accept that. Im not the traditional Genie customer. I dont want to share the tuners with anyone else in the house. I have 15 tuners. The entire reason I got the Genie was so I could have the dedicated 5 tuners and 1TB of space all to myself. One thing that would be nice to see improved is that the guide data has always been advertised as 14 days worth but I have never seen past 12 days on any receiver and I think I have came close to trying them all. It would be great if the Genie really did hold 14 days worth of guide data.

I would like to get one but I am on the fence, like not being under contract.

I have a Genie and I like it.

I don't put cherry chapstick on it though. That would feel so wrong, it wouldn't feel right.

A few criticisms about it aside, I would say that I love it. It's my favorite of the DirecTV DVRs I've used. :D

I prefer not to be under contract either. But I have had my Genie over 2 years now and no longer have a contact. There are other ways to not have a contract and get a Genie. You can find owned Genie's on eBay that will not trigger a new 2 year agreement. They usually run between $300-450 though. As long as you dont mind paying a little more, you could still get one.

I've had my HR20-700 since the inception of the DVR and went through all of it 's development; they were fun and exciting times. I still like the idea of having my home antenna hooked up without having to have an extra box. I'm retired and have dropped my premium channels and frankly, there's not much on standard programming worth having five channels of recording.I purchased my VCR in the first place and have been with DirecTv since 2006, have never gotten any upgrades and the thought of having a 2-year contract is an abhorring thought. With the advent of AT&T/DirecTv merger and with Comcast controlling a good deal of content and programming and the uncertainty of satellite being a viable competitor vs on-line, I'll have to sit back and watch the tide. I'd love to have all the bells and whistles if I could get it as an upgrade for my years of loyal service but, I doubt that being a possibility.

Why not. I am pretty confident they would upgrade you to a Genie for free. The only thing is it would come with that 2 year agreement. If you have been with them since 2006, I bet you will still be with them in 2 more years.

I don't like that my HR34 continues to suffer with frozen/pixelated recordings on certain channels. There is no way to predict when they will happen so I am unhappy that I can't rely on it as a dvr. Otherwise I would be quite satisfied.

I don't think this thread is for debate.
It's research, and people shouldn't have to explain themselves on their reasons.

I have a SWiM and like it just fine. I'm out of contract and have no need or desire to upgrade to a Genie. Fact is, I don't watch TV enough anymore to really justify paying $200 a month, but I still do.
