I have scheduled an installation for a genie and three clients. My current system is a slimline wired to SWM 8 with a H24-100, HR22-100, and a HR21-200.

WHDVR DECA wired. My first question is would you turn down the install if the tech showed up with the HR34 and three C31's? I am really hoping for the HR44 but I know there are no guarantees.

Next question is, two locations are not hardwired for ethernet. Will this be a problem for the clients? In other words will I need to run cable before the tech gets here?

    TIA for any suggestions,

    Alan

No ethernet is not an issue for clients, no jack. They use just the coax.

Don't turn him away at the door, ask when he calls if he has 44s, though I have no issue with my hr34.

Nothing wrong with 34's and 31's...

I could easily end up with a 44 and simply don't care... The Latest and Greatest craze is responsible for alot of myths about HR34 performance.

    They are solid.

Why would you get rid of the HR21 & HR22? Get the Genie, keep the two HR's whether you keep the H24 or replace it with a cleint is a coin flip. You're far better off with 9 recordable tuners than with 5 recordable tuners.

Yet there are plenty of tradeoffs. To each his own.

After 4 34's were replaced under a year, I would thus far agree.

raromr posted in the "HR34 V HR44" thread that he replaced his HR44 several times. There are always people having isolated issues with their equipment.

And there seem to be isolated people who always have problems with their equipment......

Some are blessed and might say "The H20-600 is great, I've never had a problem", others seem to attract electronics issues.

I've been offered a $99 Genie upgrade a couple time and said I'd think about it. I was also curious about the 34 vs 44. Also last csr said I would not need a tech out if I upgrade. Was he correct. I have SWM setup.

For a Genie upgrade from DIRECTV, yes they will insist a tech. come out and install it.

If you buy a Genie from a third party seller like Solid Signal, they will allow you to install it.

If it were to break in the future, they will drop ship you a new one for customer install if you prefer as that's not considered an upgrade.

Yup agree, not only 9 tuners, But also you wont have a single point of failure.....

Thanks for all the comments. peds48 that is an excellent point. I didn't even think about the single point of failure, but I would need to replace my SWM 8 for the 9 tuners.

The 21-200 is circling the drain and the 22-100 refuses to recognize tuner 2, thus my eagerness to get rid of them. I guess I could take the Genie, hang on to the 21-200 for now, and put clients in the kitchen and bedroom.

surely 7 tuners would be enough until I could upgrade to a SWM16 and add 2 HR24's.

the DirecTV tech will replace the 8 for the 16 if you go over 8 tuners.

I'd hang on to both of the HR's (actually, I DID hang on to two HR's when I got my Genie). If they do fail, DirecTV will replace them for you. If you have the protection plan, the replacements will be free. If you don't have the protection plan, they will only cost $20 each for shipping.

Since you will need a service call to go to 9 tuners anyway, I would suggest telling the tech who is doing the upgrade that you are having a problem with the HR's and ask if he could replace the for you. If you don't have the PP, offering him the money that you would be spending on S&H anyway, would go a long way toward him gladly replacing your old HR's.
