    Hi,

I currently have the following setup.
    • Slimline 5
    • Whole home over ethernet (without DECA)
    • HR24-500
    • HR21-100
    • HR20-100
    • H24-100
    • Protection Plan
My HR20 is starting to show signs of the drive going bad, so I was thinking of using my protection plan upgrade to get a Genie. I have several questions

    1. Will my other boxes work as clients for the Genie?
    2. Will I need to buy a cinema connection kit?
    3. Anything else I would need to pay for?
    4. Is it even worth getting a genie vs replacing the HR20?
    Thanks,

Simple answer. Call Directv, use your PP, upgrade to a Genie and they will take care of everything else. They will connect the internet.
And yes, get the Genie. The HR20s are very old.

I'm sure others will chime in with all the variations you could do but just let Directv do it as part of your upgrade and enjoy TV and the Genie.

Well there is two ways to this. Option one - swap the HR20-100 for a Genie HR44 and keep everything else. Or option two - swap everything for a Genie and a bunch of dumb minis.

My setup is close to the option one. So naturally that is what I would I suggest you do. But there are others here who will tell the best route is option two and use minis.

BTW the Genie is just like any other DVR. Just with a larger drive and more turners. It's new thing is it ability to act as a server for dumb minis. Please note minis are brick paper weights without a working Genie.

You do not state if you are currently SWiM or if you have two coax connection to each DVR? Nor do you state if you are currently connected to the Internet.

Any upgrade to Genie will upgrade your DirecTV network to both.

I agree with this. I would replace the HR20 as defective and perhaps you get an HR24. you then have 2 HR24s, 1 HR21 and a Genie. an awesome set up. 11 recordable tuners. you will never have a conflict!

and perhaps if you grease the tech just a bit, perhaps you can get that HR21 to an HR24 as well.

No way I'd keep anything older than a 24 myself. Toss the HR20 and HR21. Those things are so dang slow. Get a genie and a mini and you are set. Actually id probably dump the h24 for a mini too.

But if the Genie does it magic and turns them to HR24s…. I would def keep HDDVRs

You mean if the installer will exchange them? Maybe. If he doesn't record enough I still wouldn't. I'd save the 80 plus watts constant drain myself. And he'd still have one DVR as backup.

I got a call out of the blue from Directv asking me about upgrading my equipment today. I was still debating what do so I never initiated contact with them.

They are coming tomorrow to replace the HR20 and H24 with a genie and a mini. I would consider replacing the HR21 too but just don't have time to watch what I need to by tomorrow afternoon.

So just to make sure I cover all the bases with the installer tomorrow the new equipment I will need is.
    • genie
    • genie mini
    • SWiM 16 to replace the 8 I have
    • deca equipment?
    • CCK to my VOD stuff?
    Thanks

Opps, I was under the impression that it was a “hijack"

Since you are keeping 9 tuners a SWM16 is required as well as a DECA for the HR21. I would use a BroadBand DECA to connect the system to the internet. All of this will be (should) provided by the tech
