I posted part of this in another thread but it's been hijacked! I have been with directv since 2006. I have a hr-20 hd dvr, 1 HD receiver and 1 standard receiver. My channel package is the old total choice. I have been out of contract now for several years. I have been thinking about how to lower my bill some. I am thinking of dropping to the entertainment package. I also would be interested in the genie if the cost was only an extra $3 a month for the whole home thing. I called and asked about getting one and they wanted $299. Told them to forget it. Several weeks passed and I called and talked to them about if I were eligible for any discounts to help lower my bill other than dropping to a lower channel package. They offered me 6 months of stars. WTF? Anyone have any suggestions? I seriously considering switching to dish for 2 years. My dream would be to drop to the entertainment package and save $12 a month and get the genie. Is this possible? I think that all together would drop my bill $9 a month which isn't much but I don't know how to get it any cheaper. It's over $100 a month right now.
I think we can all agree that they charge way too much for tv. Same for cell phones. I do feel some sort of change is coming with all the streaming you can do now. Not to mention torrents.
I finally called today and spoke with retention and told them I was considering switching because of cost and new hopper. The lady offered me $20 of a month for 12 months and an extra $10 for 6 months if I switched to the new choice package frown my old one that no longer exists. She mentioned the genie but would only offer me aanother dvr to replace on one my recievers. I feel like it's pretty good deal but I would rather have the genie I think. Am I wrong not wanting another dvr? I currently have a dvr and I think I could switch it for one of my regular receivers if I got a genie. What do you guys think?
Another dvr would give you four tuners, almost as many as a Genie. I'm assuming the additional dvr would be free, but the Genie could be as much as $299. I have two dvrs and rarely have a recording conflict. YMMV.
Yes, the dvr wwould be free. She quoted the genie for $299. My thinking was the discounts with a free genie and client for free with a new 2 year commitment. That is about what dish would offer. Dish would end up being about $8 cheaper a month plus new equipment.
I'd be careful with the torrents. . . back in the days of the acess card duplication / scam, I had an acquaintance that received a nice letter . . something about $6500 in fines or a couple of years in federal pen.

I would like to have close to the same deal I could get with dish. I glues they would be giving me that in discounts. 34.99 for channels plus a hopper and joey for free. Am I supposed to be happy about Directv not offering the same deal?

No, but I'm sure you realize that new customers get better deals. One important consideration is programming. Does Dish have the channels you want to watch? I would consider switching, but Dish doesn't have the YES network. That's deal killer for me. YMMV

Your finger gesture is over the line imo. Disagreement is part and parcel of threads here, but there should be a line.
No you don't have to be happy that DirecTV is not offering you the same deal as going to Dish as a new customer, but you could be practical about it. I can assure you that if you were a Dish customer looking at switching, Dish wouldn't be offering you a new customer deal to keep you either.
Didn't appreciate your smart comment. I was asking a serious question. Maybe I am asking too much from them but I think trying to get them to match the dish offer is reasonable. I can't be the first one to take this approach.

IMO the HR24 is better, Genie is having too many issues software related, I'm on old SW from December and the HR24 works as it should, now if they decide to update it who knows how it would work like the previous SW, Plus with MRV and 4 tuners (2 HR24's) and 2tb externals I'll stick with what I have.

What many software issues is the Genie having? It's amazing you're able to give an opinion on equipment you don't have. I have a 34 and it's worked as it should for months. Now as for the clients - I'd recommend a H25 over current clients.
I hate to sign up for 2 more years with old equipment. I would rather stay with directv but not with just another dvr. I think the discounts are good but I can't decide.
The programming is fine. The only real difference that will matter to me is ESPNU is not in HD. Channels are pretty much the same. I just don't think its smart to sign up for another 2 years without getting the genie. If I am going to make that commitment again I want the latest stuff. I have the month of April to make a final decision. I really don't want to leave and I have never had Dish so I am unsure if I will like it or not. I am not one for change but I could like it more. Who knows. I do know its hard to turn down the price difference with the new receivers.

Then you obviously aren't a NY Yankees or NY Mets fan, or out of market NFL fan either. Good for you then. I doubt you would have much problem getting used to Dish's equipment.

Nope. My main thing is college football. WVU and I watch all the other games also. Most of their games are on Fox or FX now. Plus, I can always order gameplan for a weekend if I need to.
Is it really worth signing up for 2 more years and not getting the genie?
