I am getting whole home DVR set up on Wednesday. I currently have 3 DVRS and a H22. Do I really need 4 DVRs? She said I need a 4th DVR. I dont care but if that is the reason I needed to up my contract 2 yrs then i dont want it. I'm never thought you needed all DVRs to run this. but i could be wrong.

what else do i need to for this install. they said its free but I'm not sure what all goes into this install.

    Thanks

You do not need all dvrs but there is no H22, if you have an H20 then it would need to be replace because it is not capable of doing Whole Home. It could be changed with any other HD receiver or HD DVR.

No, you do not need a fourth. I think what they may be telling you is the receiver you have that is not a dvr is not compatible, it's probably the H20 (No Ethernet port) You do not need to replace that receiver, it just won't work with whole home.

BTW, the R22 is a dvr too so that's not it. Maybe take a look at it when you get a chance.

An R22 is an SD DVR not an HD receiver.

The 3 HR22s are enough for Whole Home. You do not need another DVR.

However, depending on what the what the 4th receiver you have is you may need to replace it on that TV to get Whole Home.

The current Whole Home capable HD receivers are:

    DVRs
    R22, HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, HR24, and HR34.

    Receivers
    H21, H23, H24, and H25.

The following link will have some info on the receivers.

This link has a lot additonal info that will be of use.

    I hope this helps.

okay thanks. Its an HD receiver but not a DVR. not a 20 either. thought it was a 22 but doesnt look like they have that one. it wont hurt to get the HD dvr also but was hoping thats not what is causing the new 2yr commitment.

would just getting the free install cause the new commitment? if so, that still okay just wanted to know. it will only cost me $3 a month so just wondering.

    Should be fairly simple,

The installer will connect an adapter on the back of each receiver. Depending on your satellite switch, it my need to be replaced with a new SWM. Be sure to confirm they are connecting installing a Cinema connect kit which will allow all receivers to connected to the Internet and allow the HR's to using YouTube, Pandora, and DirecTV on Demand.

The rest is simply software on the receivers.

The install itself will not extend your commitment. If you have a receiver replaced/upgraded during the install, that will extend your commitment.

Do you currently have cabling in your basement right now to support 3 receivers? If not, you could ask the installer to run the additional cables, but that would be beyond the free install so you might get charged for that. Generally, the installers will not set you up for future setups. If you already have the cabling there, you might be able to get the installer to use a larger splitter so those cables are already connected for you and you don't need to mess with connecting/disconnecting coax from a splitter. Just be aware that having that larger splitter than you really need and having those cable runs connected and not being used will result in a greater loss of the DECA signal within your system.

No you didn't miss anything.

The THR22 is SWiM compatible but it is NOT Whole Home compatible. Sorry for the confusion. I cut-n-pasted a list and forgot about the TiVo.

DVRs use next to zero bandwidth. I have even found that they are the ones that suffer if I am under heavy use and go to download something on demand
