Gossip: Dish Network to Carry New "Maxim" Channel(s)?

Maxim, the fast-growing British men's magazine, is getting ready for primetime in the United States.
Executives with London-based Dennis Publishing have talked for some time with USA Network brass about developing Maxim-branded shows, but now there are said to be discussions at the Universal TV corporate level about launching an entirely Maxim channel.

Universal TV is on the prowl for new channel ideas as it looks to fill up those carriage commitments it received from satellite TV provider EchoStar in December when Vivendi Universal sank $1.5 billion into EchoStar (HR 12/18).

Maxim, the monthly "laddie mag" known for its upscale blend of raunch and wit, bowed in September 1997 and last year boasted an advertising rate base of 2.5 million.

Reps for Maxim and Universal TV declined to comment. (Cynthia Littleton)

I get Maxim in the mail, it's not a bad magazine.

It like Playboy without the naked women. It always has some great articles and interviews.

My wife thought it was a dirty magazine untill I told her to look through it. Now its her FAVORITE magazine, I can't even see it untill she is done reading it.

so what???maxim reminds me of the old "girly" magazines from the 40's and 50's-pics of attractive NEARLY naked young ladies, but with nipples and crotch covered so it won't actually fall into the porn catagory-i suspect that any maxim channel would be the same-WHOOPS!wouldn't most of the broadcast channels be considered maxim channels then???you do tend to see more skin in an episode of NYPD Blue than in an issue of maxim...

I just want a TV Channel that runs The Man Show and Benny Hill all day. :D

That would make me a happy man.

I figured most would focus on the "Maxim" part. But more subtle is this:

Universal TV is on the prowl for new channel ideas as it looks to fill up those carriage commitments it received from satellite TV provider EchoStar in December when Vivendi Universal sank $1.5 billion into EchoStar (HR 12/18).

What does this mean? The way folks complain about picture quality, wasted bandwidth and price increases -- I hope this doesn't mean there are new "filler" channels on the way that no one is asking for just to fulfill one of Charlie's negotiating ploys?

I would hope that by the end of this month or June, they would come up with SOME press release letting people know what the plans are for the 5 channels. I would think that they would need a few months to prepare the channels' launches. I like the idea of USA Action and Maxim Channel, but that's only 2 ideas. I'd like for Trio and Newsworld to be included in that, but people are saying that they aren't.

I sure miss Benny Hill, I wish some channel would pick it up again. Too bad he's dead, he was a riot!

At first read, I thought of that electronic cleric, is it Benny Hinn??? There was a Frontline episode about him recently. Then I realized it's the "I'll buy that for a dollar." or what was Hill's famous line. I was quite a bit younger when his shows aired on PBS and I can't seem to remember anything they said, but my eyes were glued to the TV for some reason....:smoking:

I had a brilliant idea. Since Vivendi owns Universal Studios and their theme parks are some of the best in the world, why not launch a theme park network that could help fulful the 5 channel requirement. That would be AWESOME! My friend would NEVER change the channel.

Considering the fact that Vivendi wouldn't comment on their talks with Maxim, I think that it probably will become a reality. I think the Maxim Channel will probably launch very early next year. We now know the Action channel idea is GONE, and so is Crime unless they want to rekindle those ideas. I still think they should do a theme park channel.

Although I am not personally the biggest fan of it, there would probably be a very decent sized audience for a channel that showed nothing but Baywatch, VIP, Xena type shows 24/7. Pretty much, every syndicated show that has had scantily clad beautiful women in it. Perhaps it could be called "Babes of the USA"?

And, since they seem to have a good deal of access to Law and Order re-runs for USA Network itself, how about "The Law & Order Channel"? There are many ways this could be creatively programmed to suit many viewing audiences.

Something else to consider, if access to the programming is available, would be a "USA Classics" channel - showing lots of old B&W reruns, targeting the stuff that isn't seen on any other network (which would be a selling point when promoting to potential viewers).

And - since USA itself has shown a propensity to pick up sitcoms, etc. that only lasted one season or less, and show them in reruns, how about the "USA One Hit Wonder" channel? This would show virtually every available show that didn't last very long, again focusing on shows that really aren't carried elsewhere.

I like the One Hit Wonder channel idea. I would watch that cuz a lot of those series, I kinda liked. Some of them, I couldn't see why they lasted more than one EPISODE, let alone one season.
