Got my HR34 upgraded today

    If the only thing you have seen is slower workings then you don't have one of the truly bad ones. Can't all be totally bad. But there's a significant number that have far more wrong than just being slow and for those I don't blame the firmware alone.

    Probably the main reason the phoneline and thus Caller ID feature is removed from the latest receiver models H44 Genie Lite and HR54 Genie.

    DIRECTV tired of having to deal with Caller ID issues like this. ...

    Or maybe DIRECTV sees all these reports of land lines being dropped and they figured why waste the money on a feature people aren't going to use?

    Yeah ... reconsidering I think you're right and like that eplanation better.

    Just like my TIVO Roamio DVR has no phoneline option either. BB connection only ...

    Traditional phoneline connection to a DVR or STB receiver is pretty much a relic nowadays I guess ...

    My HR44-500 arrived today. Love it. Much better than the HR34. and the caller id works fine.

    Do you have an HR44-200? If so that has been in there for about a year. I doubt they're ever gonna fix that.

    Had my system installed yesterday with the center piece being a HR44-700. What a wonderful upgrade from the old HR34 I had last time with D*. This thing is ridiculously fast compared to the 34.

    Why does D* offer several versions of the HR44? What's the difference between an HR44-500 and an HR44-700? just curious.

    The last 3 digits are a manufacturer code. Each company has their own number.

    Humax makes the 500 and Pace makes the 700. I took my 700 apart to put in a bigger HDD and I was surprised at the shabby workmanship. Loose screws on the HDD and the cover for the HDD wasn't latched. I don't think the box had ever been opened before, the seal on the box was like new.

    Generally from a use standpoint, there is little difference. The one I've run into is at least on some -100 models if you use an alternate Remote Code, it didn't kick in until it was fully booted. Not sure if that's changed. There are a few other exceptions.

    I received my HR44 today, and the difference is quite noticeable, especially speed wise.

    After experiencing the SLOW...and getting slower HR34 for the past few months, and reading all about similar troubles being experienced by other people on this Forum, I called DirecTV today (separate subject). The CSR asked me if everything else was OK, and I told them about my slow HR34. They transferred me to Tech Customer Support, and the guy walked me through some troubleshooting. Of course, this didn't help at all. He told me I should delete some things on my hard drive to SEE if that would speed things up. My hard drive is only 75% full, so I told him that I didn't think that would solve anything. He told me there were not any scheduled software upgrades due to come out anytime soon, so we said our goodbyes.

    With the new fall shows coming out next week, and after a few quick thoughts, I ordered a new HR44 from Solid Signal on-line. It will be here this Thursday. Solid Signal called me this afternoon to make sure that if I already had a Genie, that I would be sending the HR34 back. Michelle told me that they have been instructed by DirecTV to make these calls to verify that only one Genie would be in the house. Told her I would be sending the HR34 back to DirecTV. Just an FYI.

    Hello Everyone,

    The HR34-700 came out and I waited for it to be in general supply. Even after I received one I noticed one important fact. There was only one model. To me this says that it is a proof of concept machine (upgrade from 2 tuners to 5 tuners) and there will be something else coming down the road which will fix the problems that the HR34-700 shows by improving the electronics in a newer DVR. The HR44 comes from three different companies. This is a much more serious manufacturing effort to get the customers using a more robust and longer lasting DVR before they have to retire them. Obsolescence is the fate of all electronics due to the passage of time as well as improvements in consumer products. The fact that DirecTV still has the HR34's available is most likely due to the fact that they are fully amortized and save some of the costs of replacing them with HR44's which might not be enough to cover all who want the better DVR's. I have had enough experience using both the HR34 and the HR44 and despite what DirecTV says about them being the same they are not the same. This might be a harsh comparison but I think of the HR34 as a high school sports team and the HR44 as a major league sports team. I am sure that in the future the HR44 will eventually become the high school sports team and something else will become the major league sports team. The equipment starts out as the latest and greatest thing then becomes the standard equipment and finally ends its day awaiting being replaced with the next latest and greatest thing. :soapbox:

    I got my 34 upgraded to a 44 today. Customer service could not guarantee a replacement, but scheduled a truck roll to check out issues I've been having with slowness and screen freezes.

    The DirecTV tech just left. He replaced the LNB, which he said could be the cause of glitches on both our DVRs, but he also didn't have any problem with replacing the HR34 with an HR44. Whole process took about 30 minutes.

    I gave him a nominal tip, which he refused, but I insisted.

    Anyway, the 44 appears to be working great. I lost all my recordings, of course, but I'm planning to install a 3TB external drive later today anyway.

    Record a bit of something to the internal drive as a marker.
