Sorry, I didn't mean to be one of the ones not to comply. But I thought it was a good thread.

It was fun as I spent considerable time thinking about song lyrics. I was surprised to realize that the lyrics of my favorite recordings are not necessarily the lyrics that I considered best.

Regarding the contest and subsequent cancelation - lighten up!

Taking a line or two from any great song is like showing Mona Lisa's left ear and a little bit of her cheek.

A truly great lyric must be taken in the context of the entire poem around it to be fully appreciated.

Best yin and yang lyric by co-writers:

It's getting better all the time"

You can pull a respectable nominee out of more than half the songs Paul Simon has ever written:

"'Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together'
'I've got some real estate here in my bag'
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America
'Kathy,' I said as we boarded a greyhound in Pittsburgh
'Michigan seems like a dream to me now'
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America

    I forgot this one:

Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep.
'Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

And when he finished speakin', he turned back toward the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even.
And in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

The whole problem with something like this is that there are SO many great ones that have been done...

I agree, it's a fun thread because it makes you (or at least me) think about the songs you listen to, and have listened to a thousand times, in a different way. For me it all comes down to what mood I'm in but a song can change that too, so maybe I should have nominated Clint Black's:

"Aint' it funny how a melody
    can bring back a memory,
take you to another place in time,
completely change your state of mind?"

George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps:

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
    While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it need sweeping
    Still my guitar gently weeps

I don't know why nobody told you
    how to unfold you love
I don't know how someone controlled you
they bought and sold you (...)

Folks, try to keep the lyrics to one or two paragraphs, ok? There are potential copyright issues here.

One of my favorite songs is Nine Inch Nail's - Closer

I don't want to post any certain section because you need to see the lyrics to the entire song to fully understand the song. The album the song Closer was on is the Downward Spiral and the entire album's focus is on control including cops, guns, religous, love, etc and everyone lives under some kind of control (some of that control is needed to create order). This particular song is focused on a woman controlling a man through love and sex and how the woman becomes the reason for the man to keep going.

I enjoy most Nine Inch Nails lyrics because you usually have to look deeper but there is a lot of meaning within many of the songs and those songs can have a different meaning to different people. If you only take a section of a Nine Inch Nails song you will most likely overlook the true meaning of the song.

Another person posted song Pearl Jam songs. I have to agree I really enjoy many Pearl Jam's lyrics too.

Another "crowded room' for us seniors.

Some enchanted evening you may see a stranger
You may see a stranger across a crowded room
And somehow you know, you know even then
That somewhere you'll see her again and again
