hd fee

    Does anyone pay for hd? If your in your first 2 years you get it free with auto pay. I'm sure after that you could get them to give it to you free since you are no longer under contract and could leave them, so does anyone here pay the $10 or were you able to call in and work out a deal? And was it easy to get them to waive the fee? Why they still charge for hd is beyond me when dish and cable don't, but I have found that many on here are willing to pay whatever directv charges. Directv could raise their dvr fee $10 more a month on any type of dvr tomorrow and many on this site would gladly pay it without any complaint, and would blast anyone who did complain. Most people aren't like that they have a limit as to what they will pay for a services. So tell me how you got your hd free.

    If you have auto bill pay, they will likely offer you at least one year free hd. Many have gotten two year credits. The key is to have auto bill pay.

    Yes new subs get 2 years no hd fee with auto pay. What I'm asking is after that is what you or others did to continue that free hd. Did you just ask for it? Did you say you would cancel your service? Did you subscribe to a sports package if they gave your free hd? Upgrade your equipment? I've heard of some that got free hd for life. How could someone get that offer if they were out of their contract?

    Well I threaten to cancel and they gave me free HD for a year and I'm only on paperless billing not autopay, I shouldn't have to do that HD should be the norm.

    After seeing that my January 2013 invoice no longer included the Free HD for Life(24 Months), I called to inquire and the CSR added "12 month Advanced Receiver-HD - 12moFreeHDExist Discount of (-$10.00) + Tax (-$0.63)".

    At that time, I was enrolled in both Autopay and paperless Billing, but have since cancelled both options.

    HD is not the norm yet. There are still less than 50% of the subscribers that don't have HD yet. It is completely the norm at my house, but we are still in the minority.

    Same with me. When I called I said I thought the deal was if I had auto-pay & the Protection Plan, I got HD for free (I did think that, don`t know why). Also told her that the extra $10 a month puts me over my threshold for TV ($100) so something will have to go. That`s when she came back "Since I`m a longtime customer......" and gave me another 12 months free HD.

    All the other carriers in my area (TWC, U-Verse, & Dish) have really good deals to switch, so hope I don`t have to next year, but money is money, and this is only TV.

    Why not just request that you end auto pay when free hd ends ? Then call back a few weeks later and request free hd if you start auto pay again.

    I would try this option before you threaten to cancel.

    My 2 yrs of free HD ran out last June. I had received an e-mail informing me I would continue to get the free HD as long as I continued using auto-pay. When I was bill for HD I called and the CSR gave me an additional 2 yrs and assured me I would continue to get this as long as I had auto-pay and Choice or above package. The e-mail confirmation sent to me said this:

    Hello Valued Customer,

    Thank you for being a DIRECTV customer. In addition to having the very best in entertainment, you will be receiving the HD experience you know and love FREE FOR 2 YEARS!


    To continue to receive FREE HD Access, you simply need to maintain the following on your DIRECTV account during the 24-month offer period:

    1. Auto Bill Pay
    2. CHOICE™ or OPTIMO MÁS and above package
    3. At least one(1) HD Receiver and HD Access

    Failure to maintain these requirements will result in the $10 per month FREE HD Access credit being removed from your account.

    Just ask and you should be able to get it otherwise threaten to leave and ask to speak to a customer retention specialist. That always works for me. ;)

    ok thanks for all the advice....i think when it was mentioned that hd being the norm they meant there shouldn't be a fee for it as dish and cable don't charge for it. There shouldn't be this little game every year or two where we have to call in to make sure we aren't paying 10 bucks for a service that is provided free elsewhere.

    I don't think it's correct to say Dish and cable don't charge for hd, they simply have a different fee structure.

    Service fees come with every service provider (phone, electric, water, satellite, cable, ect.) It's how they make a profit.

    Not exactly in the case of Dish. For new subs, and probably some of the old ones too, free HD is tied to autopay/paperless billing. If you don't do that, then they charge for HD.

    You mean there are less than 50% of the subscribers that HAVE HD. I think there are a LOT fewer than 50% of the subscribers that have HD judging from the DirecTV dishes I see when driving around....including mine and all of the dishes in my neighborhood.

    Well I don't care if I have to do auto pay to get it free, but don't do a time limit like every year so I have to keep calling to get it or threating to cancel to get it....and no cable company that I know of charges for it....there are enough fee's of other kinds that cable and satellite charge for that they don't need to charge for hd and hd has been around for a while now.

    Sorry to tell you that Comcast, which IS the largest cable co in the US, DOES very much charge an "HD tech" fee, which they just raised (AGAIN) to $10!

    While they do have some packages where they do NOT charge the fee, they're all triple-play packages, that ALSO include their bloated "Preferred" digital TV package. (think E*'s AT250 or D*'s Choice Ultimate tiers)
    Otherwise, if you want HD prog, you're stuck w/the fee; there is no other way to get it (permanently) waived...
    AND, CC also has the audacity to now charge $17/month for EACH dual-tuner DVR above the 1st (set-top) on an account! :eek:

    edit: ANOTHER TV provider that charges a $10 "HD Tech" fee - AT&T Uverse! Other than HD being included with their largest U450 tier, (largest base pkg & ALL premiums) only other way to get it waived is w/temp promos. They even advertise their set-tops as "all being HD-ready" - as in HD capable, IF you pay their HD fee. :rolleyes:

    I got two years and when that ran out, one year for ebill. If they ever not give me the credit, I'll tell 'em where they can put the ebill.

    could you imagine back when Black and White TV's wer the norm and when color came out ? If the local OTA could figure away to rip you off ! :nono2:
