Today we have tropical storm warnings and I was watching the Olympica via OTA in HD. When I switched to the local Dish feed the warning banner shows. I thought I should still get it OTA?

It all depends on your local station. All three here do storm warnings differently and sometimes the same station will do different things. CBS will put the picture in about 1/2 of the screen and put a red background with a warning scroll on the bottom, time and temp on the side, other times they just put a map and a warning scroll on the bottom (keeping the HD). My ABC completely cancels HD and the SD goes out over both the SD and HD feeds. NBC usually does the scroll but I have seen them goto the SD feed also.

It all depends on the equipment that your local has and what they feel like doing.

Are you saying that you switched from the OTA digital channel to the Dish analog channel of the same station? If that's the case my guess is that the station did not want to interrupt the HD signal and switch to SD to show the banner. Many stations still have older equipment that requires turning off the HD to show the weather info.

Like jimborst said stations can do what they want and they must have decided that the weather situation did not warrant turning off the HD and potentially getting hundreds of complaints.

Many stations are still trying to get all the bells and whistles working on their digital feeds. In most cases, they have the national feed going through, but have not installed or setup the equipment that adds banners and bugs to the screen.

This is also why many don't have local programming like news in HD yet.

My local NBC OTA station has the "ticker" working in HD now, but the rest still "throw the Swith" when they need the "tiker"
