[I don't think it's violating rules] the FW's metadata [S/N, ZIP, etc] could be strip down and clean FW image would be accepted by correct model HW.
Or secret combination of pressed buttons on remote/front panel would do same stripping, eg force STB accept test FW.

That's not the way it works. Your reciever numbers have to be in the range for a F/W to be accepted.

As I mentioned it's METADATA, it could be strip down. OK, you got the image from stream, take out EEPROM and burn it with the image. It would be another way to get beta version. I don't want go into technical details, but it works before.

Far too complicated for most people to follow (pulling eeproms, downloading sofware images on another device, etc). Certainly not recommended. Not to mention not relevant to this discussion. The "snap" device is a physical attachment, not firmware that can be downloaded. Even with a super secret code.

And separate graphics coprocessors/accelerators (eGPU) are nothing new. They've been common in the computer world for years.

sooo ?… the dongle must be operating over USB protocol, it must have own CPU, say 8054 kind, to control communication, pass stream for accelerated computing and send it back … it must have own FW !

The questions would start with "can it be updated via USB", "has it been updated via USB" and "how would an update be transmitted".
While it is possible that the firmware cannot be field updated, I expect that it can (the conversation ends if there is no field update capability).
There would be no need for the device's firmware to be transmitted unless there has been an update since the initial hardware release.
If an update has ever been sent, is there a guarantee that it would show as if it were receiver firmware?

I don't see it that way - many STB have a list of FWs what you can see on SysInfo screen - one for itself, other for clients, remote, etc

The FW needed to use the Snap eGPU may have already been included in a previous update, just needing the device to be plugged in to activate it. Or perhaps a flag setting is needed similar to the way an EHD is activated on the VIP or Wally STB's when the one-time fee is paid.

I understand from Dish techs the new "Snap" is currently in limited release for final field testing before the general release.
