I'd like to hear from some of the people who have gotten so bent out of shape about "not getting what they paid for" regarding how much they actually listen to those extra music channels after they go through the hassle and cost of getting an upgrade.

Sometimes with things like this and the trouble people go through to avoid contracts and owning receivers that people around here aren't very pragmatic when it comes to dealing with DirecTV.

I got the upgrade for free. They charged my $124.something by CC, and then credited my account for the same amount.

The reason was simple: There are 17 music channels I am supposed to get and not paying for. The first guy I talked to said they were considered free channels, so I asked for a supervisor. With him on the phone I explained that the 815 Holidays channel was only in Ultimate and Premier, so it is NOT a free channel.... because if it was free, it would be availble in Choice as well.

I also talked about the Irish music channel on 883 - which is GREAT by the way - and the same thing: This is an Ultimate channel, so I should get it.

He talked to a manager, and agreed.... it is "stupid" (he did not use those words) that DirecTV decided to put those music channels on a different satellite. He also mentioned he had gotten many other calls about it, among which people that want the Hope Channel or Jewish Life religious channels that live on the same satellite and are part of Ultimate as well.

And yes, I was working on my new house yesterday, and listened quite happily to Irish music on 883.

    That's not quite correct.

HD customers with a SLIMLINE 3 (3 LNB) dish need an upgrade to see the 119 satellite. But SD customers (like me) with a "3 LNB" dish get the 119 just fine (and the 101 and 110 also-hence the "3 LNB" designation).

I have ALWAYS gotten the Sonic Tap channels broadcast on the 119 bird but I have "Choice Extra" (actually the grandfathered PLUS DVR which is the same thing with a buck off the DVR fee) so I don't get "holidays and happenings" because it isn't in my package.

This is garbage. I get 883 just fine with TC+ but I don't get 815. Not purchased. I have a SL5 so I get everything I'm supposed to get from 119 but I can't tell what package is supposed to get 815. For it to not be a free channel is crazy.

For 815 (Holidays and Happenings) you need Choice Ultimate.
883 (Irish) you get with the Choice Extra package.

I agree Holidays and Happenings should be free to everyone... there is rumor in this topic that it will be after Thanksgiving.

It's not a rumor! For crying out loud, DirecTV has said themselves that around Thanksgiving it will be open for all. In the past it has been turned on around Thanksgiving. Good sweet Lord, reading comprehension must not be taught in school anymore.

    Calm down.

Anyways, that is great.... They must be moving it to a different satellite then.... because if they don't, they can still claim they made it "available to all packages", but if you don't have a 5 LNB (or 3 LNB if no HD) you might still not get it. :D

All in all DirecTV did good work at my house..... got the 5LNB and all missing channels.

For those with the Protection Plan the upgrade to a 5 LNB will cost them nothing. As I posted earlier I was told by the installer that it's a common error installers make installing a 3LNB before checking which package the customer subscribes to. Given that and bringing it to DirecTV's attention the upgrade to a 5 LNB should cost nothing to those concerned.

I do not have the protection plan.... but simply complained I did not receive all my channels. Had to speak to a supervisor to get it done, but he credited me back to my account all install costs.

There are a lot more SD receivers on DirecTV than HD so you are incorrect, the SD customers (and the money they send in every month) is FAR from being overlooked...

I know plenty of people who have bought a HDTV, just because they needed a new TV, but still have a - whether cable or satellite - non-HD receiver for their channels. My mother inlaw being one of them. She wanted a DVR, so I called the cable company and made sure she got an HD one...

But yeah, SD is alive and well. I have 2 HDTV's at my house, plus a small regular tube TV in my office. When I signed up I got the free HD DVR, the free HD receiver, and the free SD receiver, so it worked out perfect.

And yeah.... SD channels look mighty fine on the little SD box I have. No problem.

Anyways, this is getting off-topic, my apologies for that.

That's what the supervisor said that I talked to.... I asked to be transferred to one after the regular staff was of no help. I was not the first caller with the problem they got at the supervisor's desk, and they were expecting more. So far, including me, management there was allowing everyone to have their dish upgraded with a credit towards the account (basically charge CC for upgrade, then credit it all back to your account).

They also got calls from people complaining about not being able to receive some religious channels that they are paying for, but are also on the 119 satellite, and they also did not understand why DirecTV was installing dishes that could not get the 119 satellite, but subscribed to channels that were on it.

The 5LNB part as opposed to the 3LNB part is probably a $20 difference..... so they should put it on immediately if they sign up someone that has AND a HDTV, AND the Choice Ultimate Package.

I still find it funny though that the installer came to install a "Spanish Dish", but this is Southern California, and all the Spanish stuff is also on the 119.
