I have had zero luck in my quest for a HR23 receiver. Dealing with a CSR is an exercise in futility (you get what's available). How did you get yours? Do any retailers, either online or otherwise have this box? If not, why not? I give up.

Just got a HR23-700 from a tech today as a replacement for a HR21-200 that was locking up for several minutes at a time.

No luck there. Checked out my local Costco and all they had were HR22s. And get this...I got a call from some D*tv rep in response to my e-mail to them on this issue and he told me that this box was not in general release, that only techs and installers have them right now. So if a subscriber gets one it's just blind luck.

HR23 is starting to show up on eBay. (Caveat emptor.)

I just got 2 HR23s today from the installer as he upgraded me to HD. He mentioned that these were new to his office, and was getting ready to put on the dongle things when I pointed it out that they were 23s. He seemed happy and I am definitely happy.

Got mine last week when I upgraded to HD. This was in the Melbourne (Orlando) area and Mastec was the contractor.

Really the only difference is going to be the wide band tuner so you do not need to use BBCs. Functionally it should be the same as the HR22.

In theory, yes, but there were some initial reports of better PQ with the HR23. Plus it is made by Pace and none of my Pace receivers have had issues. My parents -100 is a POS.

True on the PQ, I have not had any issues with my HR21-700 (Pace) or HR22-100 (RCA/Thomson) though, so manufacture is not a big deal in my book.

Done that here in sunny NJ and all they have are 22-100s. Even tried on BB's website and no joy.

The "first look" by Doug Brott seemed to point to an upgraded platform in more ways than just PQ. Your parents are not alone.

That auction will probably be canceled by eBay as soon as D* notices it and notifies eBay. The "buy it now" price is reasonable and the shipping is free, but if the seller had to open the box to put in an HDMI cable it probably is not a "new" 23, no matter what the text says. I didn't see a box in the offering and if it didn't come with an HDMI cable it is probably a refurb or replacement unit. They don't come with HDMI cables. Still...

seems like it did get canceled as bidding has ended with no winner there.

I have an HR21-700, and when it was installed, my installer told me specifically not to use the included BBC's. Same for my H21. Should I really be using these? Will it improve picture quality?

You probably have a SWM set up that does not require the BBC's. It has nothing to do w/ PQ.

Do you know if your system has Single Wire Multiswitch in it? Did he mention SWM to you? You need the BBCs to pull in certain HD channels on Sat 99c & 103a and if you don't use them you can't get those channels coming from those sats unless you have SWM or you are using an HR23-700. The BBCs do a frequency upconversion to get back to the frequency range that it started out with, so there is a downconversion and then the BBCs do an upconversion.

Thanks for your replies. My installer did not give me any real information - he just told me that if I put the BBCs in place, my receivers would "blow up" - I knew that was BS but since everything seems to work I was okay with it. But I am not really that pleased with my picture quality on some HD channels.
