We have an HR54 and 4 HR24 units all running perfectly in a whole home setup.

We would like to be able to download programs from the HR54 for watching on trips. We have had no luck doing this.

    1. The iPad registration of the HR54 fails

    2. We have all units on coax and hard wired Ethernet. We unplugged the hard wired Ethernet from the HR54 but can find no way to get it setup on wifi. I think we need to be on wifi since ipad is on wifi.

    3. We don't use the HR54 as a traditional Genie. It has no remote wireless clients. We got the Genie so we could put a 12TB drive it in, which we did via Weakness and it works great

    Help please!

I would still characterize your install as a 'traditional' Genie. It was made to work with a number of other DIRECTV units, including the HR24s.

I think there have been issues with the iOS version of the Mobile DVR. Have you tried uninstalling the App on your iPad and reinstalling? I run ours on Android tablets. Still buggy, but I think better than iOS version of the software. There was a thread yesterday about the new version of the DIRECTV app and how after install, the app wasn't working anymore.

Also (long shot), do you have more than one WiFi network in your house? If so, your iPad must be on the same network as your Genie.

But I can't get the HR54 off of the hardwired mode. I can't find any way to get it to let me switch to wifi.

You don't need it in wifi mode. As long as your Genie is connected to the internet (press your dash (-) button on your remote; it will tell you if your connected), the shows from that Genie are transmitted via your wifi router.

You issue is most likely related to iOS. Uninstall/reinstall the app on your iPad.

Deleted and reinstalled, as I suspected the iPad app is not the problem.

Still get "can't connect to your DVR" when trying to register the receiver for the download. I can set programs to record via the app fine.

I am pretty sure the problem is the HR54 is hard wired and the iPad is wireless. I saw this same problem with my Apple TV. Once I got both on the same wifi everything worked.

So, can someone tell me how to get my HR54 on wifi?

My Genie is hardwired with no wireless minis and no wireless mode activated on my Genie. No problem downloading to my tablet.

I figure it out. We have a large house. The built-in wifi from our FIOS router only reaches half of it, so we have a mesh wifi network plugged into the router. We use the mesh network for our wifi everywhere in the house.

I got close to equipment closet and used the built-in wifi in the router and that works fine.

As I said in my first reply, if you have more than two Wifis, you have to use the same one your Genie uses. I have a similar situation, but I have to log into the 'mesh' wifi. So now that you know this, just always make sure you download only when connected to your main wifi. I believe other functions of the DIRECTV App will work on either system.

I use an Apple AirPort for all Wifi needs, as the built in Wifi on my router is poor. But my Genie is hardwired to the router, and my iPad downloads fine as DIRECTV sees it as one Network.

How exactly are all your other Dvrs connected? Coax and Ethernet on all of them?

One thing for sure is hardwire is the BEST way to connect your genie to the internet and no other box should have Ethernet plugged into it at all.
