Well isn't that special. I guess its a data rights management issue... Hmmm... I wonder if there would be a market of a hack. But that would probably be illegal or something... :goodandba

Well first you'd need to decode the receiver's "ID" since these recording are "locked to" the hardware. Then if you posted "your work" here, it would get deleted. :nono:

Can I still watch the shows on in unactivated HR-21?
I got the new DVR and need to hook it up, but I figure when I called to activate it, D*will want me to deactivate and send back my old DVR, and I don't know if the unactivated DVR will still work as a player? I know it doesn't play when I remove the card, I tried that this morning.

"What I'd do" is remove the SAT feeds before deactivation and keep it powered up if possible.
The DVR will let you watch show "for a while" without a SAT feed, but once it has received the deactivation message, it's dead.
If you don't get a new card with your replacement receiver and have to use your old card, then [again] you're screwed and will need to watch all of your recording before changing over to the replacement.

Thanks RICH584 for the info about the HR21's temperature reading. When we installed our new TV I stacked the two 21s inside the cabinet behind glass doors. I saw the 77 degree reading and thought all was well, until I had reason to pull the DVRs for a cabling change and found them nearly too hot to touch. I put a dual fan laptop cooler between the two units and added a fan in the rear to pull air through the compartment to cool things down. I always learn the hard way:(.

Not your fault. Why D* chose to disable the fan when an eSATA is recognized on the 21s is absolutely beyond me. That 77 degree reading is so misleading. And so few people realize that the glitch exists. Some people swear it doesn't happen on their 21s. A "defect" in my 21s, I got told once. In so many 21s, a defect? This should be fixed. They do get hot, don't they? Gotta keep them cool. I use a 3" hole saw on cabinets and drill holes in the rear panels. That works too. But you gotta drill a lot of holes. And you have to realize that most cabinets are held up by that rear panel.

Last cabinet I bought, I replaced the rear panel with a three quarter inch piece to plywood. Drilled the holes first. Looked like swiss cheese when I got done, but it's plenty strong enough to hold the cabinet together.

There's no way you could have known what would happen, don't beat yourself up. Nobody's born knowing how to do this stuff, it's all a learning experience.

Please call me Rich, no need to be formal. My wife likes your avatar, by the way.

That's just another thing that annoys me. I used to take a loaded TiVo when I went on vacation and they played without satellite feeds.

They won't MAKE you deactivate the old HR. You can leave it hooked up and finish watching your shows then deactivate it. They will ask you if you want to deactivate the old HR, just say no. But you must activate the replacement within a week or so of receiving it. Just explain to the CSR what you are planning to do. Politely.
