My HR24 has started making a lot of fan noise. I am not
under contract and have been with D*
for 11 years. What are my best options for
getting a new dvr? Is the 24 what they are still sending out?

DIRECTV can replace the HR24 with another HR24 or for a 2 year contract they can upgrade it to a Genie.

Could I get a Genie but keep my dvr in another room? I don't want or need to pause in one room
    and finish in another..

Since you have been with them that long you might get it free or at least a discount. No harm to ask.
Yes you can keep it. However, if you get a Genie this is considered upgrading and adding to your system and will trigger another 2 year contract. I doubt if that is a problem sine you have been with them for many years.

Correct. And if you'd be going from one HR24 to a Genie and DVR, there would be the fee for the second box.

I have 2 HR24's now.. What would it cost to add a genie and keep the other HR 24?

Sure it's fan noise and not the HDD?

Just the monthly whole home fee. Swapping an HR24 for a Genie would be a 'wash' for your monthly fee. And of course, what ever one-time cost for getting the Genie. But you'll probably get that free along with a new 2-year commitment. If you're told you can't use a Genie and an HR24, they are wrong. They work fine together.

My current set up has 2 HR24's one without any internet the other HR has a Ethernet cable for Internet access.
What would need done to set up a genie with the HR without Internet?

Let the installer do it all for you. I think they will have to come out and install a SWM system (Genie requires it). You only need one Internet injection point into your system and then all DIRECTV boxes will be connected to the internet.

Then I put the Genie in the location where your HR24 with ethernet is plugged in, plug that ethernet into the HR44/54 (don't get an HR34) and with SWM, your other HR24 will have internet access.

Plus you can reschedule an appointment if the installer only has an HR34. And as WestDC pointed out, getting your system checked/tweaked is always good.
