I’m with Rich. We moved the 54 out of our primary viewing room and put a 24 back in there because of the GUI. Managing recordings is easier with the 24, and we still get music and photos with the 24. And, we can still have channel on in the background while Pandora is playing too. I don’t think the Genie ever gave us that with using Pandora.

Another thing for me is navigation through settings. With the old GUI, I could press MENU and use the page up/down button, and when I hit select on one item, the next screen shows other respective settings on one screen. With the new GUI, I have to repeatedly hit the right arrow button through each selection to get to the setting I want. It takes more time, and I’m always checking things often. The 24 is way quicker for me in navigation.

ffwd and skip move you faster through the newer gui. And I find being able to get to the manage recordings faster now then before since I can get there from the actual playlist finally. But to each their own.

Meh... I liked the app on the HR24 for that until I realized it couldn't play 99.99% of video files. Then it became useless. I just use the app on my TV now that can actually play video files which is the main use case for me.

If I want to play music through the home theater setup, I've found that using my phone to stream DLNA off my PC to my AVR via Bluetooth is the best. Using the touch interface of a phone app is waaaay better then trying to use the remote to navigate through the DVR, AVR or TV's apps.

If you are talking about photos, and you have an android based phone, I'd say miracast is the best option for that.

I also prefer the HR 24 GUI. The sad part about DTVs C61k GUI is that it is not a true 4K GUI. If it was I could probably overlook it’s limited overly complicated layout.

What possible difference would it make if it was in 4K? Sharper text???

Yeah it would be sharper but so small you wouldn't be able to see it. On my 5K iMac if you set the resolution to true 5K it is 5120 × 2880 and you can't see anything which is why Apple reverts the default resolution to 2560 x 1440. If I set the resolution to 4K at 3840 × 2160 it is still too tiny to read.

Huh? Apple has autoscaled text and icons since before 2000, you don't get bigger or smaller text when you change the resolution. Even Windows does this right these days. That problem is in the past for everyone.

I'm a software guy and used to focus mostly on UI, less today as things moved to the web, but my nitpicky eye notices things like the rough gradients they use make things look low res. My HR54 hasn't come in yet, so I can only speak on the screenshots. I only have the progress bar up when I'm skipping commercials, but from how Rich describes his use case, yeah, it could be made a little less obtrusive.

None of this stuff needs 4K, they made a conscious decision to keep things looking low res even in HD. HD has plenty of juice to make smoother gradients.

Yup, skipping forward is fine as far as speed goes. But it brings the Progress Bar up each time and that negates any uptick in speed, I think. I can deal with the new GUI for most things but the way it works is always gonna annoy me. All they have to do to make things a lot better is fix the way the PB behaves when we click forward. Just that one little thing would satisfy me.

I assure you that if you change the resolution on a 5K iMac to 5120 x 2880 the icons and text will be so tiny you would not be able to work on it.

Yes the text would be super sharp and so would all the graphics in the Menus. They could even do nice color transitions in the text and shading. Anyway time to wake up, this is Directv, it's not going to happen anytime soon if ever.

Not at all what I was talking about in that post. ;). I’m talking about using those buttons in the menus of the GUI to jump across the settings and such.

And I’ve said for years their progress bar is a joke. Totally agree. Bring in the replay to or ultimate tv progress bars and skip notifiers already!

You don't need 4K to do nicer color transitions. I have no clue why them have them all blotchy, but it definitely is something that could be fixed with a lot less resolution then 4K. Smooth gradients are related to color depth, not resolution.

What I don't like is the pause bar, does it really need to have that large dark window blocking the view of the screen? (HR44)

More pixels allows smoother transitions in colors. Color depth allows for more gradients in pixel colors. Both work together, the more of each is the better the picture.

Don't think we'll ever see that monstrosity go away. Hope I'm wrong.
