For those who have the new DVR HR-54. Can someone confirmed that the telephone connection no longer exists? I have the HR-44 and I like the feature of caller ID application. It is nice to see the 90% of my call are robo calls versus the 10% that are from family and friends. If this feature is no longer available then why did Directv remove it?

The genie models have always had trouble with CID, plus the demand for the feature is negligible. Landlines are a thing of the past. I would surmise that the money spent putting in a phone modem would outweigh the use of the feature.

My CID is working fine on my HR44. The feature does not exist on the 54. I still have a landline primarily for a fax machine and 911 should something ever occur (at the request of the Mrs.), otherwise most everything else is cellular.

Fax Machine? Does that ever occur?

I was offered a free trip to Jamaica one time via fax. Otherwise it's below landlines in usefulness.

Even my landline phones have a caller ID window. I have never used CID on my TV. I do not like seeing the CID pop up over whatever it is that I am watching on TV.

Yea I know but I co-own a business and have a home office. It's kind of still necessary in my particular profession......plus kids are old enough to stay home alone sometimes, but we did not cave in to their cell phone wants yet.

Maybe you feel you still need caller ID, but who says it has to be on your TV screen? You can buy caller ID units for $10 and up, and they will display caller ID, announce caller ID via voice, some are wireless so they don't need to be placed next to a phone line...

Caller ID works on the Hopper3 with land lines, VOIP, and can be made to work with cell phones. It's displayed in a small window about the size of a channel logo on the lower right of the screen. Caller ID is a worthwhile adjunct to avoid getting up when the phone rings. You're kidding yourself if you say it isn't available for "modern" phones.

How does the Hopper 3 get caller ID data off a cell phone? There must be an app running on the phone that passes it to the Hopper?

Someone described it over on the other forum. It is not something I need, my cell is my shirt pocket.
