If I was DirecTV and the moderators on this forum, I would suspend the CE process immediately and take this out of public trial. Maybe we can go back to the days of the HR10 where we received an update once every 3 years. Maybe we should put an age limit on this forum as it is obvious that children are logging in.

It is sad that so many have used this process as a bashing and taken it personal.

There is a lot of good networking information in the HR20 Information Resources sub-forum. Many folks are making use of a gaming adapter or Ethernet bridge while others have employed a power line adapter to run (wired) through the electrical system.

Here's one thread that appears to be helpful, but there are many more in that particular sub-forum that could be useful as well.

I just got my HR20's on the network that Sunday after Earl's first message. Never did catch in any of the message this might be needed as a prerequisite to VOD. I have no blame for anyone, just hopefully that I can be included as soon as they get the problem sorted out.

In one sense you are very correct. We as in the CE'ers, the DBStalk'ers, and the DIRECTV'ers need some feedback to determine that very thing right now.

The only information I can give you is the checklists people are going thru:
CE'er (for at least a month)
    CE 0x0190
    VOD enabled
Networked (for at least a month)
    Passes network test
    Passes internet test
    Reset via menu

If you pass all those tests then you likely should have been enabled and you are caught up in the account enablement problem. DIRECTV is trying hard to solve this for you.

This is just a very rough guideline. I do not know the exact cutoffs that will be used or were used originally. But I offer what I do know hoping it will help you know.

    Cheers,
    Tom

I totally agree with this statement. Be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Since none of us work for DIRECTV, I think it is safe to say that we don't know why things didn't work right. There is an update thread stickied in the Cutting Edge forum that will provide as much information as is available.

What bugs me is that D* engineers instead of continuing working on fixing issues are looking in how to enable accounts for people to use VOD. That is a waste of their time.

As much as I would like to be able to test VOD and give my feedback, I think D* engineers should go on and continue making their software work better and maybe on next CE release have more account enabled for VOD.

    Cheers,

As I stated earlier .. frustration is abundant right now. I trust that everyone here is intelligent and most are adults. The beauty of DBSTalk.com is that there is a wide range of people in both age and personality. Let's try to maintain some level of decorum while discussion the events of the last couple of days.

You have proven yourself wrong. :) This is also a thankful job.

And what a wonderful attitude you've brought. Thank you.

As you can see, VOD is proving to be a hot button for lots of folks. DIRECTV has and will continue to spend time on getting VOD working. I'm sure that the folks that did the right thing and were still left out will appreciate any extra effort that DIRECTV can muster.

I'm hoping that thru the power of parallel teams, the people whose principle job is to develop new features and fix them are actually heads down working on just that. That the activation issues are being solved by another team. But I do not know that right now; it is just how I would likely have arranged things.

    Cheers,
    Tom

I am in the same boat and I would be happy to have VOD enabled right away, but I do not think that this effort is a constructive effort. We are not kids, so what we did not get the toy we wanted at the same time as the neighbor? :)

We should just wait for the next train and jump in when it passes. ;)

    Cheers

Just to make my voice heard....

I too want to thank all the mods and helpful members on this site. You all do a great job and with out DBSTalk I would not have gotten my second HR20 just last week. I have missed most of the CEs thru out the summer but have downloaded the past two and almost all from the winter and spring. I have been network since just after it became enabled. I have ran thru and passed all the tests that have been previously shown, but still no DOD.

While DOD was not high on my list of things that I would like fixed/to see, I was willing to test it and maybe I would have been more enticed into using it once it goes live. I'm dissappointed that it is not working for me, but can understand why I would not have been chosen and am willing to wait t osee if I can use it or just wait until it goes National.

Either way guys... Keep you chins up, brighter days are ahead and thanks again for your tireless efforts. :goodjob:

I hope that it is true. But even this parallel group can spend their time more efficiently than finding our accounts. Because even if they try to identify all of us who are left out right now they will miss some CE'ers. What to do at that time?

Should they still continue searching CE'ers left out to keep them happy?

They should take their time and find a better way (if there is one) to figure out who are connected and then find a better way to enable the accounts. (As I heard, there are CE'ers who have been networked since the functionality was enabled and were left out of the first VOD train).

    Cheers,
    Alex

I wanna say thanks for all the help that I have received from Earl and Tom and many unnamed people who have helped me on this forum. I went through 5 HR20's in the month of February before I finally got one that had all tuners working at the same time and could be authorized. Everyone's advice and help as I troubleshot may way through that maze is greatly appreciated. I became a CE'er soon after that and have downloaded almost all the updates as soon as they were available. I didn't dl the last one or two because frankly this thing was running like a sewing machine. I had absolutely no problems to report and I just wanted to leave it alone and enjoy it. I did dl ox-190 and I have enabled VOD. I've been connected to my network and the internet for several months. I am unable to receive the VOD. I know it's coming. I'm not going to flame anybody. I'm just going to wait. That's why it's cutting edge. Things don't always go the way they are planned.

I think if you just be patient, you will get that. Earl and Tom have both stated that D is working on it, when they know, we will know.

Everyone else is putting their $0.02 worth in so I thought I should as well. :p

Sometimes I get really busy at work and at home so I'm lucky to check this site once a day for a couple minutes. Sometimes I spend hours on this site. It always varies. Sometimes I miss stuff that happens here, sometimes I catch it right when it happens. I have no idea what you guys are talking about with the remote buttons, and I came in to the avatar movie game late and never really got in to it.

That being said, back when media share was first turned on I stole the only cat5 line I have near the HR20 from a phone jack and rewired it for an ethernet jack, and changed the other end accordingly. Media share worked fine and dandy but I only left it hooked up for a day or so because I wanted caller ID back on the HDTV. A short while later, maybe a month or so, I read here in a not so subtle hint how if we wanted to get VOD in the future we needed to make sure we were networked sooner rather than later. Was it a sticky? No, it wasn't. But from what I remember it was as plain as the nose on your face that if you wanted to participate in VOD CE's in the future you better get the HR20 hooked up to your network.

I then asked some question on what I should do and some good folks here helped me with splitting that cat5 line between ethernet and phone so I could use both and I've been hooked up ever since.

So, what I'm trying to say is, if with my hit and miss participation here I caught the information saying I should get hooked up to the network, everyone that was here at the time should have as well. It wasn't announced in a sticky but it wasn't exactly cryptic either. I'm sorry some of you missed it, but if you've been participating with any sort regularity, which you should have been if you want to participate in the CE process, you should have caught it.

Those decisions are out of our hands. What we can do is focus on the software we do have to test and do our part in testing it. If you don't have VOD (I don't) then focus on this CE which deserves the same testing as previous ones.

People, we're all frustrated. There's still work to be done :):)

Guys, some of you need to chill out. This is a beta testing project, not a national release. It is totally uncalled for to get on Earl, Tom or anyone else, because you don't have it and someone else does. The whole idea of the beta testing is to get it set up so everyone can access it, before it goes national. If you don't have it, supply the information about your setup so so D* techs can look at it and maybe figure out why you are not getting it.

As one who has worked in experimental and test electronics, I am sure that D* is working diligently to figure this one out. You can come out with a product or software that works great in the lab, but when it hits the real world it encounters things that were not in the lab environment and they need to be worked out. Be patient, and thanks Earl, Tom and all of the moderators for the superior job you do.
