Why can't they use a HR24 + AM21?
as the HR20 can't do 3D
RobertE....thanks for the information! Some day I may just need that OTA so will keep her "checked" when talking with the Tech folks if they need to swap out the box.
Good advice on the remote issue! I will take a peek at the remote programming and give that a shot! Thanks for the reassurance that my wife will not kill me when I start messing with remotes and receivers again .
As far as electronic changes in the house. Simply NONE....same phones, tvs, laptop, computer etc. No changes whatsoever for the past 3 years at all, certainly nothing within the past year. Only changes are at the very best, swapping AA batteries out of remotes and such...LOL! TV's are the same as we have had for the past 2 years. They are listed in my siggy block. I did swap the InFocus 7210 out for an Epson 6500 UB projector 2 years ago but it has been running flawlessly up until a few months ago when the remote issues started....so this I am able to rule out.
As far as the eSata....I cannot recall the HDD manufacturer but it is in an Antec MX-1 case and connected with the eSATA cable it originally had. The issue is that the HR20 does not even see the eSATA HDD...it just goes straight to the internal HDD. I left an episode of Boston Legal on the internal HDD from years ago so that I would know if the device reverted to the internal HDD.
I will try to do another reboot and the correct procedure for installing the eSATA again tomorrow. I realize that hooking it up to the other HR20 would be in vain and did not attempt that...thank goodness! If I remember correctly, the eSATA either shows up or it doesn't....that was the way it has always worked since install so I do not know if there is an alternative way to see it and use the front panel as you suggest. I simply cannot see the eSATA at all if that makes sense.
The OTA issue will be checked tomorrow. It has been a long while since I have had to mess/play with the HR20's features as it has simply worked really well (aside from the recent issues)....if it wasnt broken I didn't mess with it!
The good news on this front is that it has gotten be back in the "Techie" mode and have learned a bunch on the site here. I understand what DECA is and the whole MRV situation. Not something I would use at this point but nice to know the technology is moving forward!!!!
Thanks again for the really helpful advice from you and the others! I tend to be absent from forums at times and this is no exception...I am so very thankful that the great folks here still welcome me with the support and advice I have come to love out of everyone here!!!!!
Let's keep our fingers crossed that I can salvage the receivers! I was not aware that the remote could be purchased separately and might go that route. If I determine that after using the other remote that the problem sits with the remote itself I would hope that DirecTV would just be able to swap that out as I have had the Protection Plan since my contract inception....heck I am paying for this right????
Doesn't work. Unfortunately. One of the first things I tried. Haven't tried it since I got the DECA install, tho. Might be worth trying again.
Still no way around the multiple HRs for backup, backup, backup. I'm pretty sick of externals and their problems too. Finally get the 20-700s stabilized and the externals don't last. Don't expect them to last forever, but a few years of service would be nice.
Either the MX-1 has failed or the HDD in the MX-1 has failed. I'd suspect the MX-1. When you reboot the HR and the MX-1, do you: Leave the eSATA to eSATA jumper in place, then unplug the power cords from the HR and the eSATA, then, after about a minute, plug in the power cord of the MX-1, wait for it to spin up and then plug in the 20-700? This is the correct way to do a reboot with an external device hooked up to an HR.
Trying an external device on another HR will not wipe out your recordings. You just won't be able to view them unless you put the external device back on the HR that recorded them in the first place. By all means, hook up the external device (MX-1) to the other 20-700 and see if your problems follow the external. If they do, get another MX-1 and put the HDD in that. If they don't and the external device works, your other 20-700 is the problem. I have eight 20-700s some with docking stations and WD drives and some with large internal drives. None exhibit any problems with their remotes.
If you have to replace one of the 20-700s you'd be better off buying one that is in good working order from this site. A member named Matt sells them on this site and guarantees them, trust him. Or your local Craigslist. What you want to look for is an HR owned by a Multiple Dwelling Unit person who is selling their HR. They are usually well taken care of and only owned by one family. eBay is another place, but I always send a message asking if the seller is an MDU person. Be leery of sellers with a lot of sales.
You will probably get a refurb, I got a refurb HR22-100 this last week to replace my HR21-700.
Ok, silly question, but does the mx-1 blue light in the front even light up?
Is there a feature that the HR24 can do that the earlier ones (HR20-HR23) can't do?
If I tell DirecTV that I need the Hr24 because I want a specific feature maybe I can get them to send me an HR24.
Nope, but you do need to make one distinction, HR20= No 3D capability, HR21-24 are 3D capable, now if you dont have a 3D capable tv, you've got no leg to stand on. All others features are virtually identical.
Nothing that matters....
My HR20 started getting noisy (fan?) last week after more than 3 years. I was very, very hesitant to replace it. I was very happy with the box UNTIL I had it replaced with a new box - DirecTV sent out a brand new HR24 D). This new box is so mucher better... PQ looks better, response times are much better. I'm waiting to get the AM21 thru SolidSignal.com but quite honestly the HD LILs thru DirecTV look great and probably will use OTA as backup...
I guess I was lucky to get my failing HR20 replaced with a brand new HR24... sooooo glad I made the call to DirecTV...
My 3 HR20-700's had been displaying annoyingly long response time over the past week but on Saturday afternoon they all started responding normally. I use RF on all of them, the front buttons respond correctly and I have ESATA on two of my receivers
Thanks for all the support and assistance....
On the eSATA drive the blue light does come on so not sure what the issue might be. Since it is a wicked busy week, I will probably not mess with it until Wednesday. I will be trying the suggestions!
On a much more positive note, the remote is now WAY better than it was when the issues came to a head the day after Thanksgiving. I am not entirely sure what happened and although there are still delay issues, they are NO WHERE near where they were previously. Perhaps after the wipe of the HR, and the guide was fully populated, it did something??? Not sure but will keep on checking it!
I will be sure to update you all as the week progresses and I have not totally given up on the external HDD!
i just had may hr20 100 fail and got a -700 as a replacement, that hard drive sounded so bad i asked for another replacement and got another 700.
all my audio and video glitches went away with this refurb. until just the other night on ABC so i'm not sure if they are back or not. also the 100 unit was terribly slow to respond to guide stuff and as you navigated thru the todo list etc etc.
i have no proof of anything but i'm wondering if getting a 'fresh' /reformatted drive helped me out and it would pay to reformat a drive to try to get rid of stutters. i'm assuming the 100s and 700s use the same software. but the refurb works much better than the old 'aged' unit i had. at least for now.
