I think I'm going to place my order today for an HR20 to replace my HR10. On the off chance I'm given a choice, should I ask for the HR20-700 or HR20-100? Are there any real advantages of one over the other? Specifically, are the OTA tuners better in one? Any other pros/cons of either model? Thanks.

...you can ask for whichever one you want, but it will have about the same effect as asking for a sunny day.

As far as I can see from reading (I don't have both) the HR20-100 runs cooler and needs an external RF antenna if you want to use the RF remote. Some people report that Call Waiting Caller ID works on the 100s not on the 700s.

I haven't read anything that leads me to believe that there's a conclusive difference in hardware or basic DVR functions.

The only way you will get the 100 is to find a Best Buy or other B&M and buy one off the shelf. Install it yourself. I have both 100 and 700. The 100 is much better built INMHO. My 700 is noisy, hot, and buggy. The 100 never glitches. Also, if you plan to use rf remote from a bedroom etc, only the 100 has the external rf antenna connection. The 700 is internal and of limited range. And, you might fine the 100B black model, I wish I had.

My $.02 I got my HR20-700 last week and it runs pretty cool, also Caller ID works perfectly.

My install is this Sunday so I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I would never let a DirecTV contract installer near my place! Just my .02.

I ordered over the phone with D* and my install was through a D* sub-contractor. I received the HR20-100.

I have both... I also like the 100 better, The lights on the front are not as bright (big deal if it will be in your bedroom as my 700 is.). It is quieter and runs cooler. The 100's menus seem a tad faster to me as well, but that could just be me. Either way, both of mine work flawlessly, the 100 is just a little better looking but for the most part you wont notice a difference either way.

I have both and don't have a preference one way or the other, they both work fine. The 100 is quieter and so it is in the bedroom. The 100 was my second unit and when the installer showed up I asked him what I was getting a 100 or a 700 he said he had both on the truck and I could have either one I wanted.

Mine will be going in the living room so noise is not a factor. If given the same choice by my installer on Sunday, which would you pick?

One that works over one that doesn't.
    Sorry,
    Have a coin?
If you want to play with the CE releases, then the -700.

I think most will say they like the 100 better from what I have read. The 100 may be a tad faster responding. go with the 100 if you have a choice.

I'm not sure about "most". The -100 has only been out for maybe three months, while the -700 has been out 9-10 months.
The more -100 getting installed the more defects are being posted [same as the -700].
Maybe the -100 has a better track record with CID. That's about the only thing I would say is the difference.
I'm not saying you're wrong, just that the "database" isn't equal right now to "know".

Guess where I was going with my comment was that from what I have read those that have a 100 and a 700 tend to sing the praises of the 100 a bit more.

You might be correct, or it could just be your "take" on it.
    Either way, you're "not wrong".
"My take" isn't yet in-line with yours.
This doesn't make me "right". :)

My HR20-100S and slimline dish were installed this morning. Installer showed up around 8:10 and left at 9:45. He had to re-aim the dish once and then took him awhile on the phone with D* to get the unit activated, but now all expected channels are coming in. Now time to play and get everything all set up the way I want. He left my HR10.

I had mine done yesterday. I was upgrading from a standard HD setup (no PVR). He ran dual new wires and installed the HR20-100. I went outside to inspect the new dish. THERE WAS NONE! He left my old round 3LNB dish there. When I questioned him and said I thought I needed a new Oval 5 LNB, he says,"Well, I don't see it here in the order, so I didn't do it"... Doh!
I said, well, I don't care what that paper says, I want one.
He went to the truck, grabbed it and installed it for me.
I asked about the RF remote, he said this receiver did not come with RF just IR... ??!!??
I said you have to hook up the antenna in the back. He said, what antenna? Doh!! again. There was none in the box.
He goes back to the truck and says there was one laying on top of his dash.
Then we went back to the 700 vs 100 topic.
I said, how come I don't get the 700 model to what he replies; "We just install what they send us. You can try calling DTV up and ask but don't hold your breath". Great!
I though of calling and ask for 700, but after reading this thread I am not so sure.

The 100 seems to be doing OK. I have not tried recording yet. Too much to play with as I try to re-train the family on it. I know the networking does not work though. I have tried everything. It says connected, but no internet. My WMP11 does not see it as a device. Don't know what to do. :(

Had my install today. Got a HR20-100B. The black is very sexy. I totally wasn't expecting it because I have read that you have to find the 100's in stores and that the blacks were extremely rare. It is quite nice.

I have both, I had a 700 since they first came out, it just died on me last week. For some reason it couldnt see the satallites anymore no matter what we did so they replaced it with a 100.

So far I like the 100 better, for a few reasons.

Its definitely quieter, when the 700 was off it was pretty loud I couldnt hear the 100.

The LED's are much nicer on the 100, I had commented on another thread that I hated the LED's on the 700 they looked cheap, I thought the R15's LED's were much nicer and the 100 follows in the R15's footsteps.

I was getting a few voice sync errors on HDMI on the Mpeg4 channels mostly fox with the 700, so far I havent had any with the 100 but time will tell.

The 100's menus seem slightly faster but I wouldnt say there is a big difference.

I got a refurbished 700 yesterday to replace a new 100 that was defective. I noticed right away the front of the 700 was much sturdier than the 100. The front of the 100 seems more flimsy.

That being said, the 700 is running about 20 degrees hotter than the 100 was sitting in the same spot......

The circle lights on the front are also different, I like the 100 better in this area.

Other than that, the units seem identical....
