I think with your modification added in, LC, that Step 1 ending with "SEARCH NOW" instead of "CONTINUE" is similar enough to the current method that this SEARCH proposal could work for novices and experts alike.

And even just using STEP 1, being able to use multiple keywords and BOOLEAN operators would still be an upgrade over existing SEARCH. /s

All of your ideas are great and I’d like to add the following.

Here is one of the very simple searches that the HR20 does not do & I greatly miss from my Tivo days. The year in the movies does not seam to be part of the searchable text even though it appears in the information panel.

e.g. try 2007 & category Movies and it will return no results for you.

These are searches that I had routinely had set up on the D* Tivo to autorecord the newer movies that don’t work on the HR20
    2007 & Movies
    2006 & Movies

    or

200* & Movies (returns any movie in the decade)

+1, Mark. That's why I'm requesting that KEYWORD be able to find ANY text present in the GUIDE info in STEP #1. That would include numeric info, as well as HD, LB, CC, etc.

I figure that since we're just asking, we should go for broke! :) /s

TiVo also includes a "Director" keyword search ...

Steve - Great stuff in your opening post, but I would make use of the trick-play keys for "editing" operations, as well as inserting quotation marks:

My suggestions (yes, just like TiVo) ...
    • [REW] to delete ("go back")
    • [FFW] to add a space ("go forward"
    • [REPLAY] to clear all ("do it over")
    • [SLIP] to insert ("slip something in there")
    • [PAUSE] to insert quotation mark

D* should take a long look at how UltimateTV implemented search/autorecord. They had numerous filters available for fine tuning, many more than Tivo. You could even narrow the search/record to blocks of time, which was really useful for preventing duplicate recordings of shows like "the Daily Show". You could also filter by decade/black&white. I used this one alot to find classic mystery/suspense movies from the 30's and 40's.

One of the most useful features was the ability to get your results in alpha order, instead of date. The alpha order eliminated duplicates making the return list shorter.

I didn't know UltimateTV let you filter by decade. I've never used one, but I've heard over and over again what a fine platform it was. It's a shame it never went further.

    Thanks, Drew.

Works for me too. I am totally open to either method of keyboard entry shortcuts... color buttons, trickplay keys, or some combination of the two.

What I really would like to remain unchanged from my proposal is the use of multiple keywords, wildcards, "" and +/- BOOLEAN operators... and the retention of more program information than at present, to take advantage of enhanced search capability.

The other idea I really would like to see in the next SEARCH upgrade is the option to filter each SEARCH or AUTORECORD by a choice of CHANNELS I GET, CUSTOM 1, CUSTOM 2 or VOD channel lists, and that saved AUTORECORDs or SERIES LINKS should remember which filter was chosen.

The Tivo also seems to treat multiple keywords as an OR so it doesn't matter if you put:

    SIMON PAUL
    or
    PAUL SIMON

either way gets you any shows with PAUL SIMON

With the HR20 it almost seems the keywords have to be in proper order and also seem to work like a phrase search. For instance at the begining of football season I would put STEELERS AT & Show Types = Live to get all of the Steeler games (both home and away).

With the HR20 I have to use two series links
STEELERS AT & Showtypes, Live (only gets the away games)
AT PITTSBURGH STEELERS & Showtypes, Live (only get the home games)

Anyone else notice this or am I missing something???

Ya. In my proposal, the default would be "OR". You'd use +/- for AND/NOT.

And yes, I believe you're right on with your observation. It treats phrases as literal strings, as if they were enclosed in quotes (""). /s

What street is this word on? On my street, they're saying "What did you say, CIR?"

Were you thinking that "custom 1" is a subset of "channels I get" or might it also be "channels I get" + VOD ?

In my mind, ideally, VOD channels should be included in ALL channels, so any custom subset could be a combination of VOD and broadcast channels. I'm not sure if that is possible, based on the way D* implemented VOD, however.

As proposed here, I'm thinking that "ALL" means "ALL Broadcast + ALL VOD", based on my ignorance of how things are going to work once D* fixes CIG and hopefully allows us to edit them. We can revise this if necessary, of course.

Sounds like you want an option for "CUSTOM 1 + VOD", e.g. Maybe they can give us multiple checkboxes. :) /steve

How about the ability to add multiple category filters? This way you could narrow down even further what you want to record. For instance you could record keyword "Maryland" category "Football" and a second category "Live". This would allow the HR20 to only record the actual live sporting event.

Actually the request specifies the current HR20 category selection metaphor, which does include subcategory selection. Subcategories now though are only relevant to the main category. So, e.g., you could select "Sports" and subcategory "Football". "Live" is not currently a category or subcategory.

Not a problem, though, if "Live" is in the program description info, the way I envision SEARCH + simple boolean operators working (see NOTES for 1 in post #2), you could do a keyword search: "Maryland +Live", category "Sports, Football" and only see the results you want.

Actually, with just "Maryland +Live" and no category specified, you're not going to get too many extraneous "hits" (if any), so your search can even be that much simpler. /steve

PS: This SEARCH/AUTORECORD request is now on the Wish List, so if you haven't already voted for it, you can do so here.

All of this would be great, but CIR is not the only thing that needs to be fixed. I was just commenting in another thread how bad the meta-data is on the HR20. Is there any plans on the horizon to improve that?

    From your mouth...

We've had this request on the Wish List for a while:

Add more program description INFO, to allow better SEARCHES and more show details, like "Original Air Date"

You're right. An editable CIG would go a long way to making things better, but wouldn't it be nice to have the whole package as described above? :) If you SEARCH after step 1, it's no different than current SEARCH, but offers lots of options, if you care to avail yourself of them.

    I am guessing here:
    CIG == channels I get
    CIR == channels I receive.

these two acronyms are really the same thing, right? If I am off base, please be gentle, as I don't have my hr20 yet.
