Have an HR21-100, two nights ago the receiver was "locked up." Received 22B on 4/23. Had been watching hockey on Versus. When game ended, turned tv off but left receiver on (which I normally don't turn off.) Came back later and turned on TV, still on Versus but couldn't change channel. Remote and on-box buttons all non-responsive. Only recourse was to power cycle by unplugging. The reboot was protracted as it had to re-discover satellites, etc. and a couple times it looked like it was hung as progress meter would pause (most notably at 97%) Since then working okay... I've only had the three weeks but it had not done this before 22B and of course, only once since.

Welcome to DBSTalk :) It would be more beneficial to reply with your specific issue. +1 doesn't do much for explaining the problem. :)

I've reported this in other threads but thought I would add to this thread as well.

I have 2 HR21-100'S each has locked up twice in the last 3 days. I will be home in a couple of hours and I wouldn't be surprised to find them locked up again. They seem to lock up during day light hours (at least the den DVR does as it is functional in the mornig before I go to work.)

No response to the remote or to the front panel buttons. Had to RBR to get them back.

Called directv last night and the CR claims there are no reports of this problem. She elevated my case to supervisor level and was to get a call back with in 2 hours. It's been 22 hours and still no call.

Is anyone other than me calling directv about this problem or do we just expect them to monitor this site?

Why not just go back to the previous version until they get this sorted out? I'm not a happy camper.

I haven't had another power up problem since last Friday/Saturday but it continues to act "buggy." Like while watching a recorded show it sometimes won't let me stop it. I press stop and nothing happens. Another instance was when I recorded two 30 min. episodes of the same show that plays back to back (reruns). One time, it recorded them as one long show (1 hour) and I had to view it that way. It's always set to record them individually and I play them back every night so I know it normally works like it's supposed to. I know technology isn't perfect by any means and I've only had the unit a few weeks so I don't have the history of most folks here, but until this recent update I had virtually no quirks at all and now I'm encountering a few here and there.

I must be living right -- my HR21-100 has been quite stable lately (though quite sluggish at times).

Though having posted this, I fully expect to walk into the living room and find it locked up. :)

I've had no lockups on my HR21-100 since I've had it (I think just over one month), and I've received every update. The only problems I have had with this release are periodically it doesn't respond to my remote (don't know if that's a problem with my Harmony One), and for the first time ever, last night it stopped a recording after 6 minutes. I wasn't even home.

When programming my remote, I decided I would "turn off" my HR21 whenever I shut down my AV system, even though I know the HR21 is not really off. I wonder if being "off" is enough help to the HR21 to help explain why I've never had it lock up and have never needed to reboot it manually?

I am using an external 750GB drive for what that information is worth. The HR21 is connected using only HDMI for both audio & video via my Denon 3806 receiver with Dolby Digital enabled and native mode disabled.

I too had a freeze, and used the red button. Today I was looking at VOD and the system was extremely sluggish. It took about 30-40 seconds to move down one line in the menu and see the info on a title. My installation was 4/14.

I've learned not to try doing anything except watch or pause a show while VOD is downloading. The process of the downloads makes my HR21 mostly useless, no matter what release I've had. Once the downloads are done, everything goes back to normal, but it's painful during.

I already posted here when each of my HR-21's froze twice (on 2 different days). One of them froze again yesterday (first time since Sunday), and here is some detail about that incident - hope it helps with the diagnosis.....

I leave both of my units in 'standby', and they both received the latest update on the 23rd.

I noticed yesterday when I got home at 5:03pm that the yellow light was on as if recording, but knew that we did not have anything scheduled for that time. Sure enough, no response from the remote or buttons on the front panel.

I hit the red button, and then had to hit the power button to have it go through it's routine (sticking on 97% for a while).

Then I went to see what shows it recorded and missed. At 1:00pm my wife tapes 'Days of our Lives' from our local Channel 7's HD feed (although the show is in SD). In the 'List' of shows taped, it showed DOOL, but a duration of 4h 3m. The show was taped, but it just kept going, and stopped when I re-booted.

None of the other 3 shows we had set (all on different channels) taped. We just got 4h and 3m of Channel 7. (Remember - I hit the red button at 5:03, and the show started at 1:00.)

All was fine this AM at 8:15.

    Hope this helps.........

I've had the exact same thing happen. My 2 HR21-100's were installed 4/7. Day after installation both were completely dark (no lights) and unresponsive to either the remote or buttons on the front panel. I pushed buttons on one and nothing happened. I walked to the other and pushed button on it and nothing happened. I pulled the plug on the second one and it started to the reboot. I walked back to the first one and it is lit up and working.

This past weekend one of the units did it again except it didn't recover on its own. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. I'm not sure when it "powered" down. This happened sometime on Saturday and most likely was Saturday night sometime.

Not sure if I have received the update. I assume so but can confirm tonight.

One other thing is that I believe both nights this occurred we had fairly severe thunderstorms roll thru the area. Could an extended loss of signal be causing this?

Most likely not, but it is possible that you had a power surge that could have affected your receivers. Do you have them plugged into a power surge protector or a UPS?

It is highly recommended that you use a power surge protector at a minimum with these receivers. They can be extremely sensitive to power surges and outages.

My entire system is on a standard 1300VA PC UPS with line noise filtering and AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation), which isn't as good as an expensive true sine output UPS costing about 10x more $$, but this may be contributing to the stability of both mine & others' DVRs. I'd expect that the line noise filtering is doing more than anything else, since the inverter isn't active until needed on these. I've also adjusted my UPS to accept only the narrowest voltage and noise variances, which is NOT the default setting for APC units.

Just trying to contribute some data. I doubt anything about me makes it stable!

Came home to a frozen box today. All blue lights were on plus record light and unit was properly displaying Discovery HD, but would not respond to remote or front panel button presses. History shows last program recorded at 1:00 on Food HD, and that recording is in the Playlist and plays properly, at least for the first minute.

I reset the box by pulling the power and it's been working fine since it rebooted.

Ok, this is getting annoying. In the past two days, two times I've had to reset my HR21-100. Both times I've been watching TV and both times my receiver froze. I couldn't access the guide, change the channel.... nothing. At first I though it was my remote but when I tried manipulating the receiver from the access panel, no response.

What's up with this?? Both times I was watching two different channels. Yesterday, I was watching the Cavs/Wizards game on ESPNHD and today I was watching StarzHD.

    Forum, any ideas????

Thanks, I'm doing the procedure right now.... I'm doing it with a ERB reset before the procedure and one after. I'll post a follow up in a couple of days to see if it helps... Thanks again.

    Hi all:

I am a new DirecTV convert - its nice to make your acquaintance!

I have 2 HR21-100 installed and both are running the latest f/w. I have had only 1 lockup so far on the primary unit - I disconnected the power cable and things seem to have come back and running fine. I will find the red button the next time and give it a go. ;)

I do have a really annoying problem - have seen a couple of threads from last year on this forum but haven't seen a solution mentioned. With the HR21 in Dolby Digital mode, forwarding or reverse causes my Denon AVR receiver to lose the DD lock and there is complete audio silence. I have heard it mentioned that this is a tough problem to solve but I have to say that while the Motorola DVR had its issues (Cable box), it certainly did not have this particular problem. Skipping forward worked like a charm.

Have folks found a fix for the DD problem? Thanks a bunch.

Don't know if this is an option for you, but I also use a Denon (an AVR-3806) but use HDMI for audio and video and have had no problems with this. I've only ever used HDMI with the HR21, so can't say if the other digital outputs have problems for me. Do you have an HDMI input on the receiver as an option? My Denon passes the video flawlessly, but I don't know your receiver model.

Mine is an old Denon - no HDMI, no Component even. :) If it becomes too much of an issue, I will simply use PCM and forget about DD.
