I've never had a problem with Active, and tried it on 18c - worked fine.

Over the past few days (in between my business travels), I had the chance to go through the HR21 in some detail with the updated firmware.

    Here are some observations:

    1) Overall, this is a huge improvement over the base code that came with the box - the navigation, the improved screens, the improved stability, and the ramp up towards what the HR20-700's have in 19A.

    2) Menu speed is still a bit lacking in some places, especially when going through setup and changing channels - its not bad mind you, just not as crisp as the updated HR20 version.

    3) Setup no longer seems to lockup like it did before when going through the network setup. I was able to actually start over with my wireless network connection (for testing, not be need), and it immediately worked correctly. Over a 36 hour period, the Media share functionality also continued to work without fail. That said, this is another place the speed lags the HR20 current version.

    4) Trickplays also are improved, and many seem to work as well as the HR20-700's I have, however, several in particular seem to be erratic in their speed and response times - pause and resume being one of those that doesn't behave the same every time you use it.

    5) The audio levels and reproduction (without dropouts) shows drastic improvement over the base code. I have only had one case of noticeable dropout in a total of about 20 hours of viewing, and it happened to be during a live college football game I watched that I happened to also have recorded on one of my HR20's. In playing it back there, I confirmed it was apparently a broadcast issue, and not something with the HR21.

    6) Old recordings and new ones I assigned all played back properly, however, I noticed the old ones seemed to have some lag in startup that i did not see in the new ones after the update. Maybe its just my imagination...the lag is very minor, but I'm trying to inspect results closely.

All in all...so far, pretty good. I have some programs scheduled while I am gone traveling early this week for work (again). I'll do further testing when I get back.

I'd give this update a "B" for a grade at this point.

Since the download, I thought everything was pretty decent, but as of this morning I'm not so sure. Since Friday night I had seven series links that recorded ( mostll early morning on the SCI or travel channel). I also had one that recorded early Friday evening. This morning I went to play them back and all I could get was a blank screen, no sound with the orange timeline across the bottom. On several of them, When I tried the playback, I got the instant keep or delete message with a zero time timline. That is, the end point was zero. Even the show from early Friday was blank with no sound.

I then decided to do a menu reset. I went to the reset screen and told it to restart recorder and hit the minus sign to confirm, but the HR21 would not restart. Tried this three times with the same result.

I then did and RBR and the HR21 locked up on screeen 1 of 2, "Almost Done". The rotating lights did not rotate and the resolution lights did not not walk through the pattern. A second RBR went through to completion and the HR21 appears ro be working correctly. The only recording that I saved was the one from early Friday and it plays back correctly. I also tried a manual recording for a minute or two and it records and plays back correctly.

There seems to be an issue in general with it locking up at step 1 of 2 from what I'm reading.

In standby since 9am Saturday. Left on ch4 (mpeg-4), last recorded Saturday night Live on ch6 (mpeg-4).

Brought out of standbyaround 2:30pm today and got a black screen. GUI still worked. Attempted a menu restart, but no response. Had to RBR. Back to normal viewing, SNL did record and is still there.

I got home from soccer today to play my Titans-Colts game (Nashville WTVF ch. 5 MPEG4) - middle of the Colts first drive I tried to skip back to a previous play with several skips back and the picture went gray and the box stopped responding. GUI remained active and responsive but every channel and recording I tried was a gray screen. I tried to do a menu reset but after pressing Dash (-) to confirm, the box refused to restart. I did an RBR and the box is coming up now.

My big worry is that the LAST time I had this issue as I recall it was about 10 days ago on a Thursday night, also during a Colts game on an MPEG4 local) and the recording was unrecoverable. :(

The refusal to restart via the menu looks like a real bug. There are at lesat three reports on that just today..

Like I said, I experienced it with 0x168 about 10 days ago, also accompanied by the gray screen issue. Before resetting, I went ahead and turned Native Off again, though I am still connected via component.

Just had the second gray screen lockup on the same recording. About 2 hrs and 20 minutes into the recording, I used a trick play button (can't recall which one) and got a frozen, unresponsive screen but the progress bar showed that stuff was happening, accompanied by little snippets of sound (just like the recording under 0x168 a week ago Thursday that I referenced). Exiting the recording revealed a gray screen and no video. This time the unit allowed a menu reset however. On Step 2 of 2 at 25% right now.

    Two issues:

-) Watching Bears Game... went into MyPlaylist.... RED Button deleted teh PGA Tour: (HD on NBC, 4.5 hr recording).... got stuttering audio for about 5s

-) Re Wound the Bears Game... then caught back up to live time... and then had some regular reoccuring audio drops.... switched channels, and returned... audio drops went away

    1) - Remote codes. You all know the drill.

    2) - Blue ring flickers

    3) - Blue ring will get stuck with one led lit at the 12 o'clock position

Other than those, so far so good. Downloaded automaticly during the push. Recordings were intact. Behaved well during the Browns/Bengles game. Haven't had much time to test other things yet.

Watching behind time (30 seconds to 5 minutes), no audio problems. Jumping back to live, I got a lot of audio drop outs... :( I had to hit replay just to reduce them...

    Anybody seen this one?

I was watching HD Sunday Ticket and brought up the guide. This is what I got. Maybe it's a new feature?

I closed the guide and reopened it and it did the same thing. Then, I closed and reopened and it looked fine.

Two thumbs up for not locking up on me during Sunday Ticket today, though. :)

Checked today, and no response to remote or front panel coming out of standby. Had to RBR to get it back. Seems fine now. (It is reminding me of the early days with the HR20. Now the HR20 seems like TiVo in comparison, but if they do as well with the 21 asthey have with the 20, this will be anawesome machine in May!)

Maybe the stuttering was Rex tripping over his own feet....OK...sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway...I saw some stuttering on 2 NBC shows today as well briefly. IN my case, I happen to know that the local affiliate has some "issues", as this happens with local news as well, and the station has acknowledged some problems.

Sorry you had to see a flawed performance of the broadcast for your beloved Bears. :(

My Packers came in crystal clear and clean today. :D

Listening to an XM channel, I tried tuning to an MPEG4 local. Black screen with no audio and video. All channels were like this, GUI worked fine. I was able to restart via the menu, and everything was fine.

Brought unit out of standby this morning and all seemed well.

Issue 1: Went to do a signal test and got a message that it would conflict with a showcase program from some 2 hrs before. Said cancel and it just brought me back to the signal test selection screen. Re-selected signal test and got another conflict message for a prior showcase item. Said cancel and test proceeded. Upon completion of checking 103(b) strength's, returned to live tv and left room. (both conflicts had titles for individual NFL highlight showcases)

Issue 2: Returned 30-mins later to a black screen. Tried changing channels and got the "Live TV Conflict" screen saying: "Available tuners are recording. Select one of them to tune to 8 WVUE," but there was nothing else on the screen.

Did a menu restart to return to live tv.

    Audio dropping remark..
I get the same thing on the HR20 as well. I have since used SuperVolcanos theory of live buffer TV and when I get to what is live TV, I hit a back slip one time and that does seem to alleviate the issue.

    EDIT
I am using the optical output to a Bose Lifestyle 48.

Ok, here's what I've found so far:

ISSUE 1: When rebooting either the HR21 or my ViiV PC the notification saying the server connected is "This <SERVER> has successfully connected...." I reported this before on the HR20. The grammar is pretty bad on that one.

ISSUE 2: SD Shows have no audio for the first 6 to 10 seconds however "replay" seems to fix this. [Previously reported I think]

ISSUE 3: Network Setup. Went into network setup yesterday and "Gateway" was blank. Tried to set the gateway and test, test failed. Went back to Advanced Setup and gateway was blank again. Tried to set gateway again and machine locked up solid requiring a RBR. After the RBR I used "Reset Defaults". This populated everything correctly and tested fine. Then I went back in to set my Static IP and everything worked fine.

ISSUE 4: MediaShare. Takes approximately 10 to 15 seconds for a song to start playing. When it does finally start playing there is no time/progress bar on screen. There also is no time/progress bar when changing to the next MP3.

ISSUE 5: When changing channels from SD to HD it takes 15 to 20 seconds for audio to come in on the HD channel.

ISSUE 6: Came out of standby last night at 12:25 to find a black screen, no audio or video. I could change channels but still no picture or audio. I could access the menus so I did a menu restart and everything came up fine.

ISSUE 7: "Previous" button doesn't always work on the first press. It some times takes 2 attempts, in rare cases 3, to get the unit to go back to the previous channel.

ISSUE 8: While watching an SD recording I tried using the yellow button to toggle to the alternate audio, Spanish, and lost all audio. When attempting to toggle back to English it didn't work. Info screen showed it was still in Spanish. Hitting yellow multiple times still did not toggle. Using "replay" about 4 times in a row brought me back to English. This may or may not have been a one time thing and I haven't found another SD show with alternate audio to test it with just yet.

    That's it for now.
