What's disturbing to me is that one should have the option of OTA If we truly no longer have that option, many of us will need to rethink things.

That's not a threat, simply a logical reaction to not having the options we need.

I have heard(on another forum), that D* plans on a USB add-on OTA tuner in early 2o08....for the HR 21....nothing solid mind you, but if true, it would be
welcome....makes some sense if D* planned this option all along...

They are not discontinuing the HR20 line. See this link:

    http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=108803

Only the -700 line has been shifted to the 21 line. The -100 is still in production.

We're still here and we're still defending the same thing. If you'd read the forum a bit before posting, you'd see that what was obvious to you isn't the case at all. And who said anything about an upgrade? It's a different box with different features. Some features have been removed, some have been added (or made better).

    Thanks for the post though.

I haven't read or seen anything to suggest you don't have that option. Even the OP got this handled to his satisfaction. True, it took a few phone calls he probably shouldn't have to make, but not everything works out perfectly.

Exactly, just keep your HR10-250 hooked up to a diffrent input. Just go through guided setup and choose ota only.

I tried to get as much information aout the rep as I could. I have her manager's phone number, her name and employee ID #, her fax number, etc. Hopefully it will all work out as promised.

The bigger problem now is being able to find the HR20-700 in the stores. Today I went to BB, CC, Fry's, HH Gregg, and CompUsa and no one had the HR20.

Any other suggestions on where to buy the HR20-700? After playing with the HR21 more, I really do like it so far. There are several things I like better than the HR10, and several things I don't like as well.

Try online. Value Electronics and Solid Signal are both great places to buy from. Not sure if NewEgg sells DirecTV equipment but you can look there as well. I'd highly recommend Value Electronics, Robert is awesome to work with.

See if you can get one from Circuit City's website. They were listed there two weeks ago, I just opted to get one at the local store. Good luck.

Just got back from a little HR20 hunting expedition. Costco had lots of HR21s but not HR20. Best Buy had neither. Only place I found the HR20 was Circuit City, and they listed 3 in stock (they also had zero HR21s, oddly).

However, still no joy from DirecTV in getting them to credit me if I should purchase from Circuit City. Maybe I should take the stupid HR21 and have faith in DirecTV's "solution."

Lesson #1 here is not not really take information like that to heart. When I first go the HR20, they refused to ack this website and I was told we were all making stuff up. Then I find out the real deal with the HR20. All of it's problems were due to software. So in one way I felt better.

OTOH, I do believe the HR21 will not support OTA. But the USB dongle they make for it will :D

    Joe,

I live in Zionsville and feel your pain with local CBS issue, etc.. In fact, I have regular correspondance with the WISH-TV engineer, via email, to find out if there are at least any rumors about LIN and D* getting closer, etc. He told me a couple of weeks ago that there is absolutely nothing to report - not even unsubstantiated rumors. :( Anyways - that lead me to the HR20 as well...

Check out my Circuit City thread I started recently. The Carmel Circuit City was able to get one of the HR20-700s for me from the Lafayette store. As of Sunday, the Lafayette store still had 3 HR20's.

    Good luck!

Just got off the phone with DirecTV, and set up my "upgrade" to the HRxx for Friday (no charge, not even S&H, btw). I repeated to them that I wanted the HR20 and not the HR21, and if the installer shows up with the wrong one, I will send him away. Tried to reason that a quick trip to Circuit City would alleviate a lot of wasted time on either end, but the CSR would not budge on credits. After a pause on hold, she came back to inform me that the HR21 was not available yet (!). Politely informed her this was not the case.

Called the installer (Connect TV) but they are in the L.A. area and have no way of communicating with a local installer. Fantastic!

I guess it's just wait and see at this point.

Good Luck!!! This is the exact scenario I had last week. I was told, by D* CSR that my HR21 would be replaced with an HR20. I was scheduled for a service call on 11/9/07. On 11/8/07 the installer called to confirm my appt. At that time I inquired if the installer would be providing me the requested HR20 I was told that they could not tell me what box they would have. I told them to not bother coming if they did not have the HR20. My service call was scheduled for 8am to noon at 12:30 no call no show. Finally at 1:15 got a call from installer whe advised they could not locate the HR20. They told me to call D* and have them ship me the Hr20. This resulted in me talking to 5 different CSR's, the last one was the rudest person I have ever spoken to in my life, she hung up on me!!! In closing I still have the HR21, I cant get my locals in high def, but i did get a 60 program credit. GOOD LUCK

    More schizo D* CSR.

The Costco on Lawrence Expry in Sunnyvale has pallet loads of all types of DTV equipment. They have plenty of HR20's.

I think you may run into a problem with places like Circuit City. They have a deal with DTV and they get commissions and spiffs when they sell a box. The receipt will have all kinds of restrictions that you have to sign when it prints out, "you agree to activate, you agree not to return the box, you agree to..." stuff. It may be that the big box retailers have that setup.

I just paid for the unit at Costco along with the giant box of paper towels and a rotisserie chicken. No signing, no weird stuff, just another piece of merchandise to them.
