One other thing I thought of was when I initally hooked up the HDMI today I tried very hard to lock up the receiver using trickplay. I pressed play using MRV so the progress bar would pop up and then I hit the 30skip button 20 times fairly quickly so the screen would not change and when I quit pressing the button the progress bar jumped ahead 10 minutes. I was actually able to stack as many 30skips or replays as I wanted. Before the lockup I could not stack more than two or three.

It can't hurt to update your Denon firmware, if possible, but I assume that same Denon was working fine via HDMI when connected to the last HR you were using with it? I ask because my HR24-100 is currently connected to a 2005 Panasonic TH-42PD50U display, which lists its HDMI port spec as EIA/CEA-861/861B, which is HDMI 1.0, if I'm not mistaken.

Then again....I have seen when folks update the firmware on their routers periodically....problems disappear despite having newer DirecTV CE's as well...go figure...

Updated firmware on any component is typically a good thing.

Each release of HDMI from 1.1 to 1.4, was designed to be backward compatible with HDMI 1.0-1.3 devices, so the issue needs to be addressed on the HR24 side, not the Denon.

    From hdmi.org:

"Are HDMI 1.4 devices going to be backwards-compatible with older HDMI (v.1.0 - 1.3) devices?

Yes, devices built to the HDMI 1.4 specification will be fully backwards-compatible with existing HDMI devices and their features."

Actually no. I was connected via component as I had an HD-DVD and a BR player connected via HDMI to get 1080p. There was no reason then to have the HR20-700 connected via HDMI. I tried connecting it directly to the TV via HDMI to see if I could get 1080p, but since it is a Sony, I could not.

When I got the HR24-100, I connected it via HDMI in the slot where the HD-DVD player was as it gets almost no use these days. :eek2: The 3806 only has 2 HDMI in ports and they are 1.1. My early model is only 1080i as well.

The new Sony ES line looks interesting. :) My 3806 has been great, but it can't decode any of the newer formats.

It looks to me like I have more of a Denon problem than DirecTV has an HDMI problem.

In theory and principal, I would agree.

however, from what I've seen firsthand and also read at AVSForum and other sites regarding some HDMI-connected devices..."designed to be" and "being" operational are not always the same thing.

This really came into play with numerous specific HDMI-based HDTV models about 2 years ago. They were supposed to work with Blu Ray players, game units , but didn't. Some got addressed with firmware updates...a few never worked correctly with certain HDMI devices connected.

My brother had a Toshiba HDTV that fit that latter description. Both the HDTV and Blu Ray player manufacturers pointed the fingers at each other saying it should work fine, but if not, its the other manufacturer's "fix". It never worked. He returned the player, got another unit from another manufacturer, and things worked fine. Lesson learned.

Since we have seen previous HR2x models start out with HDTV model-specific HDMI issues, only to have them eradicated later...perhaps this is another case where this issue might also go away in future updates.

Well, like I posted, I'm using an HDMI 1.0 display with my HR24, so if you're having an HDMI issue, it's probably not because the Denon needs an HDMI firmware upgrade.

If you're having other issues with the Denon, that's another story. :) I used to use Sony ES gear and I found the build and sound quality to be great, but unless things have changed, the Sony configuration, set-up, sound field and other menus were incomprehensible, and I consider myself a nerd. :) Without a doubt the most unfriendly piece of consumer equipment I ever used.

I'm a happy Yamaha RX-V2600 user now, though I don't route HDMI through it. I like the new Onkyo's, to be honest, especially the ones that offer some ISF video calibration controls, like the TX-NR1008.

Speaking of hdmi and stereo receivers, I'm having quite a bit of sound off sync with my Yamaha RX- V765. I had just replaced my Onkyo TX-SR 601 which was fairly bullet proof compared. It is a older receiver the Onkyo that is. My other Rec. which has sound issues with my HR21 is a Kenwood VR-6070, which is older still. Probably 5 years or so.. I noticed that I THINK I seen a firmware update for the Yamaha, can't find now, but it WAS in perfect sync with my H24-700, but couple ce's ago it is out of sound sync. Not quite sure why, just happened while watching it of all times.. So I am not sure if I want to put the new firmware in to the Yamaha yet, cuz who knows what kind of can of worms it opens up? It is not always hdmi though, but usually turns out that way temporarily at least.. RCA plugs usually do the trick, for a while, then I hook up hdmi, or optic then it works for a while longer. Happens to all three stereos and direct boxes as well.. I just go with the flow and change stuff around when needed, sorta like buying gas when needed.

Hopefully we get some love this week to keep up with the other units.

The HR24-100 Customer Candidate we got last week seems to be fine for the most part, but a few issues remain for repair for some.

I truly like the push.... very tired tonight and was planning on doing the other HR's tomorrow night. So, with the push, I just have to wake up in the morning and see what happened. And, according to the notes, it will be a push.
