Ok I did try the mini output jack. It is a 3.5mm. I used an adaptor to the toslink and could not get any volume whatsoever out of it. When I changed the audio on the tv to external and tried changing the volume I got a message saying unable to do that.

How do your speakers connect ? My speakers have posts and you need 2 wires to connect just 1 speaker.

How big are these speakers ?
Have you considered an inexpensive Surround receiver / AVR ?
Or maybe a sound bar ?

Sorry guys it is an H24 box. Mind is frazzled. Something that is confusing is working back from the speakers-then to the amp-off that is the red and white audio wires: The red and white are connected to the output of the converter. The toslink goes from the tv to the input of the converter so the DTV h24 is only connected to the TV via the HDMI. But we get sound to the external speakers. The volume on the tv itself will not change the sound. I can put the volume all the way down to zero and still hear the same sound. This tells me the audio is coming from the DTV box, correct?

The sound is transmitted thru the HDMI to the TV from the DTV receiver.

Then how do I control the volume to go up and down once I hear it in the external speakers?

On my stuff, you turn off the internal speakers and then the volume of the TV takes charge of the external speakers.
