I currently have a genie in one room and an HR24 in another. The HR24 has been replaced 2 times and I'm still having issues. I was thinking about seeing if they would just replace it with another genie but had a few questions. The HR24 had 2 tuners. If I switch it to a genie can I still get the 2 tuners? I don't care if it gets the standard 4. I just want amother dvr box that works. My current genie works great. The HR24 is crap. Pixelates and freezes in commercials and have to flip the channel to get it working. Not to mention the super slow channel changes.

You can only have one Genie per account.

What you can get is a Genie client (mini) that has no turners or hard drive. It uses the genie that you have.

BTW - what Genie do you currently have?

It's a 33 I think. I don't want another client. I like having the separate dvr. When I upgraded long ago they let me keep my old dvr. I don't want to get rid of it but I was told the only hr24's they have now are refurbs.

If you have an old original HR34 Genie, you should get it replaced. They're junk. Call DirecTV and tell them it's dead. You'll get an HR44 or HR54 Genie DVR as a replacement. Then keep your HR24. The HR24 provides much more flexibility than a Genie Mini Client. Just don't let them upsell you to a Genie Server (HS17).

I'm fine with the HR34. The HR24 is the one that keeps giving me issues. I'd like to replace it with another dvr if possible.

Does anyone know why you cannot have another genie on one account? I'm not wanting another dish or more tuners. I would just like to have a receiver that actually works. The HR24 is the worst one I have had from them.

It causes a technology problem that can be solved but DIRECTV has chosen not to.

Isn't that problem resolved by the way the HS17 associates to clients as compared to how the HRx4 Genies do it?

Get the 24 replaced. I just had two 24s go south and I am waiting for the second replacement. Both refurbished. No new 24s anymore. Refurbishing seems to work very well now and we get fast HRs. Then get the 34 replaced. Litzdog911 gave you good advice, the 34s are by D*'s standards...junk. Think of that, D* CSRs will tell you the 34s are junk. You will get a 44 or a 54. I have a 44, never had a better DVR. Do yourself a favor...replace both.

It's been a problem all along. Even before the 17s. D* just isn't gonna allow it.

My point is they changed the way clients associate with the server with the HS17, which should eliminate the issues I believe MysteryMan was referring to. That doesn't mean they will ever necessarily allow more than one HS17 on an account, but if they don't it won't be because of any technical issue. It'll be because they don't want to.

Perhaps -If Enough People Flee- From AT&T D*TV - They may rethink that policy in exchange for more revenue replacement

If every customer who needs more than 7 tuners left Directv, it wouldn't have a huge impact on them. They are among the most lucrative customers since people with a lot of TVs have more disposable income and are likely to have bigger packages and will be among the last to cord cut. So I think it would be short sighted if they start requiring new customers to get HSx7 and still only support one, but we'll see.

The HR24 option will go away of its own accord in a few years since Directv no longer recovers them, so the future supply of refurbished HR24s will dry up and there won't be any way for people to get a second DVR.

My point was this debate started long before the 17s came out. The policy has never changed except for folks that do the testing.

They are still recovering them. I just sent one back a couple weeks ago and I'm waiting for another recovery kit for one I just got replaced. You do realize how easy it is to refurb the 24s?
