New to D* and new to DVRs......

While recording one program, the unit is slow to respond to remote commands, i.e. pulling up the guide, playlist or changing channels.

Is this typical? If so, I can't imagine how slow it would be if multiple recordings were going on in the background.

The time it takes for the Guide or Playlist to display can vary. Although overall, its not unusual for any of the DVR's to take a few seconds for the Guide or Playlist to display. I'm assuming that sometimes there are things going on in the background that might affect this. Like guide data updates and VOD that DIRECTV downloads to DVR's for quick access. Plus as you mentioned, recordings may affect this as well. On channel changes, if you are comparing channel changes that you make on your TV with cable or OTA, the time it takes on satellite receivers is going to be much slower.

No, I'm saying pulling up the guide when one program is recording (red light on) vs. when nothing is recording is noticeably "laggy". Almost like when a pc is running a large process in the background and everything feels sluggish.

I understand what you meant and was trying to explain, that recording something does seem to affect speed. And there are other times when its slow to display the guide , etc w/o having the red light on. And it may be because of the background processes I mentioned.

The channel changing is slow on satellite receivers in general. And there are setups like having native on that make it slower. I haven't really noticed that recordings affect the speed of this. Although I can tell you that on my HR34, there are times it has been much slower to lock in on a channel then on my HR22.

Thanks, I assumed the receivers are slow at multi-tasking. Too bad they don't put multi-core cpus in them.

Maybe the new HD software will speed things up a bit.

The sluggishness while recording is a known issue, and it will be addressed.

    Thanks, Stuart! That's great news.

Two weeks in, and I'm really enjoying my new TV service. The whole-home DVR is amazing technology and the HD guide on the H25 is blazingly fast.
