I did the CLEARMYBOX thing as you suggested and the DVR restarted a couple times in the normal procedure with all the steps when the DVR is restarted. Now there's no picture, just a black/blank screen. Nothing happening at all for about 4 hours now. Unresponsive to the remote. On the box itself, the lights next to 480i,480p,720p,1080i,1080p are all lit up in blue and have been for hours. I've never, ever seen this before in all my years with HR boxes. This doesn't sound right. I'm getting worried. I hope something didn't go wrong. Should i hit the red reset button on the box? :(

I did. It went through the normal restart process, went to "searching for satellite signal" then "Rebuilding Scheduler list" Then...nothing. no picture for over 5 minutes. Then the DirecTV logo screen saver thing was moving around like it does when a program has been paused for awhile, so i clicked on a random key on the remote and it went back to a black screen. It was in 480p format for some reason. No Live TV appearing, can't switch channels. Then, I hit the "List" button and it said the drive is 100% free which is normal after restarts and eventually the recordings come on, but this time, for some reason there was no Live TV coming on and everything is in 480p format. My DVR has been restarted countless times in the past and I understand the slow process of everything coming back to normal, but there has never been a case of no live tv or it staying in 480p format after a regular restart. After about a half hour, all the different format lights on the box blinked a bunch of times and now have turned solid blue. And now nothing is responding to the remote. I think this is what happened the previous time before i hit the red restart button like you suggested. but i wasn't by the tv to witness these events last time, unlike now.

What's going on? this doesn't seem normal? Could this CLEARMYBOX thing have broken the DVR? I would have never done it if i thought it might, i would have lived with the lagging annoyances. I don't know what to do now. :(

Try pressing and holding the Exit button on the remote for a few seconds. A message should come to the screen that says it changed it to HD or SD.
If it does not, it is dead.
We have been doing the CLEARMYBOX for a long time and I do not ever remember it breaking a receiver.

I just tried holding down the exit button. Nothing. There is no picture at all. In fact the TV doesn't recognize a signal coming from any source, it's as if the DVR is not plugged in. It was the same thing last time, until i hit the red reset button and then it went through it's normal restart procedure and ended up where it is now. Please don't tell me this CLEARMYBOX thing just killed the DVR...

It didn't. But an HR34 can take a long time to rebuild and get you even a picture on. Leave it for several hours turned off. And it'll even take awhile to turn off after pressing power. It's really best to do it as you go to bed for the night to be honest.

Well I'm not sure what you mean by "turned off" cause it just seems frozen and unresponsive and not giving a signal to the tv set at all, the tv thinks there's nothing even plugged into that HDMI port Like i mentioned, the format lights are solid blue and it doesn't respond to the remote or to pushing any buttons other than the red reset button on the box.

But is it normal after the CLEARMYBOX, to restart in a normal process, with all the regular steps and not have a live tv picture, and remain in a 480p format, and then all the sudden freeze up with all the screen format lights blinking on the dvr, then turn solid blue and completely lose the signal to the television set? It's just supposed to sit like that? it did that once for 4 hours before i hit the red reset button to revive it.

Do you suggest keeping the DVR as is in its no-signal / unresponsive to anything state? and a picture will magically just appear and everything will be fine? I really hope that will work, but I just wanna know if this is normal procedure for the CLEARMYBOX because i read different posts on this forum and others of people using it, and it seemed everyone was able to use their DVR normally after it restarted. I can't even get a signal?

I think the CLEARMYBOX was a coincidence and the Genie is just dead. Might be time to move on and request a replacement from DIRECTV at this point.

there's no way it's a coincidence. The DVR has been performing the same way with the lag for ages. I've done plenty of restarts and never had issues. Nothing like this has ever happened. I would love a replacement but the problem is i have 3 different external drives that I've used with this particular DVR, so they are tied to it and all the recordings would be gone if the DVR is gone.

I just wanna focus on somehow fixing this issue and saving the recordings until there is no possible way they can be revived. So if anyone can tell me what i can do to get this DVR working even in with the annoying lag it was before, I'd appreciate it.

You have 3 external drives? Try another drive.

I've never had a 34 (thankfully), but I've run the CLEARMYBOX many times on all my HRs and didn't see anything like this.

I think you have to come to terms that the time has come and the DVR is dead.

Earlier this year, DIRECTV was upgrading HR34s for free. Then they stopped because they had reportedly issued a software/firmware upgrade to the 34s.

Does anyone have the info on that update or know the update version? Is it possible the TS didn't get that update? Can he force an update?

you can dress up a piece of crap all you want, it still is a piece of crap. That is what the software update really did, it his the slowness for a little while but it never fixed it. The problem with the 34 is hardware related and there is no software that can fix that.

    No, and it sucks.
The HR34-700 is my primary Genie.
I feel like I am holding on to my old Camero because of the feel of the steering wheel.

My HR34 reboots every day now around 4pm.
It was doing it around 4am for years until the power outage after Matthew.

Many years ago, I had to add the external drive because it would not boot up on any internal drive.
I have an external fan blowing across the external drive to keep it cool.

It comes down to the remote for me.
I hate the peanut remote they give with all the new boxes.
I need a back light and a functional input for other equipment.

and not only that but you can still use the RC6X series remote control with newer Genies. No reason why to hold to a 34

Well i guess miracles do happen. After letting the DVR sit for 12 hours, unresponsive to anything with those blue lights solid on the box, I did the red button reset again, and to my surprise, this time, everything went well. The signal and Live TV returned and it acted the way a normal restart did. I am in no way confident that this will last. I need to figure out how to get all the recordings off the dvr. Is there a way to do it other than a DVD Recorder? like connect it to a computer and save them on it so they are watchable?

You can use your desktop as long as you have a hardware capture device for video, it cant be transfer "digitally"
