For the last month or so, I've been getting a lot of video aliasing in video from directv - here's and an example:

It happens on all channels, live and recorded and on demand. I've tried:
    • Rebooting
    • Changing hdmi cable
    • Changed resolutions on dvr
    • Moved to a different tv input
None of these made any difference. The video from my blu-ray player (dvds, blu-rays, and streamed video pass-thru). Any thoughts?

    TIA!

Some time ago, we had a similar problem. Turned out that our tv was starting to fail. It was a plasma. One day, it made a “pop” noise and the picture went black. Now we have a different tv.
You mentioned blu-ray etc but you did not say whether you were experiencing the same problem or not. We were.

Must be an old set? Haven't seen a DLP in years.

Your bluray is sending 1080p to the TV whereas Direct is sending 1080i. My guess is the TV is not handling the upscaling correctly.

Yes, he's pretty old but still had a great picture (except when watching directv...) - just never to put in a new lamp every 6 to 12 months.

If it was a scaling issue, I would expect it to be full screen, but this only affects areas with a little color gradient like the pavement in the example I provided - it's bad on people's foreheads too.

I also changed the resolution setting on the hr44 (selecting one resolution at a time) and the issue was the same at every one.

There was a time when I was enamored by the DLPs. Rather large, IIRC?

Do you have a newer set you can try? See if the same thing happens.

It's a touch taller than modern flat screens, and the same width, but a lot thicker.

It's the only tv I have. Might take it over to my sister's this weekend and try watching a recording on her Aquos.

I've debated getting new tv but the picture rivals everything I've seen; I don't have the bandwidth for 4k. The only possible with it (other than this aliasing stuff) is that it only has 2 hdmi ports. I've worked around that with a blu-ray player with hdmi feed thru.

That's what I remember, the thickness. The depth. Did your set come in "pieces"?

A few years ago I had a bunch of plasmas. Thought there wasn't a set out there that had better PQ. Then I got a 4K set and that completely changed my thoughts about picture quality. It's not the difference we saw when we finally got HD but it's a very noticeable difference...got rid of all my plasmas and bought some more 4K sets.

That the date for the last of them? I was looking at them in a Circuit City, IIRC...and they went out of business in 2008. Just curious. What killed the DLPs? I always thought they had a great picture.

I owned a WD60737, a 2009 model. It had a great picture. Loved that TV. And yes, it was big and not hung on the wall. :p

I sold it to my neighbor when I bought our LG. He uses it at his place on the Cape - still going strong!

No, it was one piece. I have the 65" - I think the bigger ones and earlier generations may have had separate cabinets and screens.

Thin screens killed residential DLP not enough folks thought the extra depth was worth the better picture and dealing with the bulbs. I think Mitsubishi hung on a bit longer than Sony did with their LCD projectors.

Last time I checked, they were still making some DLP projectors for theaters, but I haven't checked in a few years.

Mine is older than that - I'm too lazy to dig out the paperwork but it's at least 15 years old. Had one of the 2nd generation Mitsubishi 65" hd-ready sets before then; it was in two pieces and was huge.
