Pondering over. Starting to wonder if calling the new number is any different than playing CSR roulette. First the Access Department goes away and now Retention seems less than what it was before the merger. Geez.

I think it would have been if I had of just asked for a replacement receiver.

There are many postings about this problem and the problem is in the stream between the Sat and the dish. No amount of messing with the equipment will fix that, its a dtv problem and they are working on it. So sit back and relax, its going to be fixed. Don't know when but soon.

not really, the part of transmission is just an air

most likely it's in DTV uplink center, perhaps encoders, stat muxers, etc

Is there a test I can run on my stock HR44 to determine if the hard drive is dying? I was going to use my upgrade on a 17 but after reading the horror stories I'll stick with a 44. Need a reply soon before my wife kills me.

    Thanks

    Update.
Got the new card Friday and was going to install it in the receiver that I deactivated in Jan 2015 on Monday morning.
Well, one of the programs I recorded Saturday night stopped / froze much more than usual and then froze so that nothing would get it going again except a reset. I tried it again after the reset and it froze again. Then when I reset it I went into the advanced diagnostics and ran the Smart Short Test on the hard drive. It FAILED, error 3013 this time. Last time it passed and the Smart Long Test FAILED error 3016.
I gave up, installed the new card in the deactivated receiver. Called the number on the paper work and it took forever to get that activated. I will not ask for a card again, I will just let them send me a replacement receiver and card.

Strange: When it finished loading the new software it said it was the same version and date that it was when I deactivated it, 0x912, 11-18-2014. I then decided that it was because every time the screen went blank I pressed the ON button to get it back so I could see the progress. I then tried it again, forcing it. This time I left it alone until the receiver turned itself back on. Same results. Oh well, it is running, recording, etc.
Got it going and much to my surprise it still retained all my settings and my Favorites list.
I recorded some shows yesterday and then played them. It was very nice to watch without the freezing.
It had the software that was used in Nov 2014 and I just checked and it is 50% complete downloading the new software version.

Note: Some of the wording might have changed a little bit since I copied this down several years ago.

Run the Built in Self-test to try and repair your hard drive.
To run the hard drive tests, do the following.

Reboot DVR with the red button next to the smart card.
When you see "Running receiver self-check" press Select

You should see a message "Entering Diagnostics Mode"
    Choose Advanced Tests Menu ,
    Hard Drive utilities ,
    Short Smart test

Next run the file test, the DVR will try to repair a bad file if present.

If you receive error messages from the above stop and post them back on
    here.

If the all tests pass, you can run the surface test. This test is long and
    could take several hours .
You may want to run it overnight.
Every attempt is made to save programming.

If you receive error messages post them back on here.

Why do you think the HDD is bad? It's so easy to blame the HDDs and they're rarely bad.

And you have no idea what was wrong with the 24? Got any idea what error 3013 is?

Has to be something about the head writing data to the disc because all old recordings were playing flawless without freezing, etc.
DTV knows nothing of those codes. Heck, they do not even know how to get to them. Never heard of 02468 to force software update, 30SKIP in place of 30SLIP. etc.

So it must have been the HDD? Seems like the answer. Awesome diagnosis.

"DTV knows nothing" would have been appropriate. I will never forget: "What's an HR20-700"?

I too have been having this issue. For me I've only noticed it on local channels. I've seen them on both live and recorded shows.

DirecTV has sent out techs 3 times now trying to fix my hardware (new LNB, splitters, connections, etc).

The tech today (a more senior tech) told me it's happening to many and that it's a feed issue (he said a satellite issue but more likely something with ground-based hardware).

I called back to my case manager and they have not heard of this but will try to look into it.

I live in the San Jose, CA area. Where do others who are seeing this live?

    Larry.

If everyone would put in some kind of location indicator under their avatar you wouldn't have to ask that question. Not asking for street addresses, even the state would be a help.
