Thanks. But they didn't ask us, so we are stuck with what we have. ;)

While this might sound logical to you (and me) DirecTV customer base is vary wide, to include senior citizens. This press and hold thing would not work for them. Hopefully DirecTV does not go this route to add functions to an already crippled remote

I truly hate press and hold buttons. But it works decent for TV input, and only installers really need the shortcut to the settings menu, or the system info on clients like we have now. I don't feel press and hold to get the last four digits of your rec id and your Internet connected confirmation is a problem.

    But they already have.

What they should have done is had a new remote for the Genies with PIP buttons (and a CC button) and keep the RC71 for the clients.

Yeah, well that's the true solution we have no chance of.

And my idea, well there's even more ways to do that as well. Its just a matter of getting DIRECTV to think a little different. I've wondered why they don't have the guide button flip between the one line guide and the full guide, and make the filter screen you get on the second press a menu option via the dash key. That'd free up the enter button for this as well.

And make LIST>LIST the TODO List shortcut as well. ;)

Why did I know that was coming? :)

Actually, I'd make the second screen there some sort of easy filtering for the playlist, or maybe even do something similar to what I have been wanting forever... List the first time brings it up newest to oldest. Second time brings it up a-z. And make the ffwd and rewd buttons skip to the top and bottom of the list no matter where you are. Much better than the whole dash, arrow arrow, select arrow arrow select to get it done now. I'd be happy if they simply made it so you could start typing in the playlist like in on demand to get it into alphabetical mode, and use the second press of the list to get to real filters, like sports, series, movies, and in a perfect world, basically filter it by tags that you place on your recordings. (Kind if like folders)

To do list could then become the dash key, as my ideas remove the need for the dash key to pull up the menus anymore. Actually, I'd make it pull up manage recordings, not the to do list.

Since I'm so used to the RC65 remotes, and don't need RF, I don't need the RC71 remote since its so bad implemented on remote buttons and crucially missing buttons, IMHO they need to come up with a better remote especially for AV users, plus not everybody knows on how to stop a recording with no stop button, What's up with the enter button as a tv input? This definitely will confuse a lot of subs.

I also think the "0" key could function as something else, if it's pressed first.

I dumped my RC71 and went back to my Harmony 900. I'll pick up the RC71 again when we have stop and a way to bring up the progress bar without pausing the show.

I'm just glad the Play button on older remotes (and Harmonys) still acts as a Play button and not a Play/Pause button.

The Play/Pause button causes me about 1/15 of a second delay and that seems to be a pretty minimal impact on the overall functioning of the remote.

It's worth pointing out that the RC71 is based on open protocols. Any home theatre manufacturer could pick them up and build a device that gave you all the power you want.

Right now, everyone's big thing is IP control. The real big boys want to control everything from an iPad or other device, rather than have a standalone remote. DIRECTV's DVRs do work well with IP control, of course, although it would be even more fun if DIRECTV would open up and release more codes to the public.

And the current iPad app has separate Play and Pause buttons, a Stop button, and could conceivably have all manner of direct 'buttons' to any menu item.

Just need to label it below, like the Enter key right next to it.

They could always just add a few more commands to the IR codeset without putting it on the remotes. Then just publish the HEX codes for them so people with programmable remotes like a URC or Harmony could add them and use them. Plenty of other CE manufacturers do this already (many TVs have discreet input or power commands that aren't included on the OEM remote, but work well with programmable remotes).

The current play/pause button is really just the pause button from the older remote.
