From my experience, we’ll just agree to disagree. My 24’s are rock solid and don’t miss recordings like the Genie. I also have two 24’s in my RV. It’s hard to use two clients in that case when the Genie is at home. Plus the HS17 does not support OTA.

The only equipment they refurbish is receivers AFAIK. And the refurbishing process is a joke. Anything else is new.

All these years, all the DVRs I have had and returned and I have never sent a remote back. I haven't taken one large HDD out of any of the DVRs I've had, all were returned with 2TB drives in them. Not one word have I heard about this.

Yes, the 24s are old. Doesn't seem to matter, what's wrong with most of them is the internal HDD. Stick an SSD on one for the first time and you will be using the best HR24 you've ever had, and the quickest. If we thought the HS17s were what we need we'd have them. Putting your eggs in one basket when it concerns D* is taking too much of a chance for me and others. I'd suggest trying an SSD in one before you go off on those of us that have done that. I heard a lot of comments recently about people making comments about the equipment they don't own or haven't used. I didn't agree with that argument but I think it applies here. Try it, let us know what you think.

I've got another 24-500 that is beginning to refuse remote commands. I don't know how many times this has happened to one of my 500s. It takes two clicks to do anything. I gotta make the call. I'll send the box back, they will do practically nothing but wipe the HDD clean and some other poor soul will get it.

I only have one HR24-500. All my others are -100’s and -200’s. They are still sending out -200’s and -500’s, so hopefully you get a -200 this time. I have not had any issues with the -500 they gave me last year, except for the faulty 10 year old 500G hard drive that was in it. I replaced it within a month after receiving the IRD. Ugggh.....

Damn near every refurb I've gotten in the last couple of years has had problems that the SSDs don't touch. And I keep getting 500s, which I like but they do have problems. Especially refusing remote commands. I haven't seen that on any other models of the 24s.

Well amazingly I got my HR54! Got it through tech support. For the 5th time I explained the CEC issue but this time it was understood. Only option was to have a tech drive one to me. With covid issues no one I do not know personally is allowed in so he just dropped it at the door and took off. Hooked it up tonight, at boot it formatted the drive, so I guess at least that is new.
Good news my LG OLED sees the box, and can control it with the magic remote, though not sure I want to go that route, may go back to my Harmony. But everything CEC related now works as it should. Now I'm hoping to enjoy some Geni goodness, with remote viewing when I'm out of town, had been using a SlingBox.

Remote viewing doesn’t use the Genie anymore You can pre download your recordings but you can’t stream them remotely anymore. Using the app now is how it will work with the genie also

Take a look at the underside of the 54. There will be a sticker there that will tell you the DVR's birthday or it will say the 54 is a refurb. The odds of getting a "new" 54 are slim.

Checked the box's birthday it's Nov '17 so I guess it was only the hard drive that was new since it formatted. So far so good, smooth quick operation, CEC functioning fine.

No, the way they wipe the internal HDDs during the refurb process makes the HDDs format when you boot them up the first time. Every refurb will reformat the first time you start it up. The internal HDD in your 54 is probably four years old. D* does have a refurbishing program but I don't think that includes putting a new HDD in any HR.

I'm sure if they get a receiver back and the HDD is dead they put another drive in it though I wouldn't bet that it is a "new" drive. Probably one pulled from another unit that had something else wrong with it.

And training. I wonder how many people that work for D* could open up and HR and put a new HDD inside? I know it's not rocket science but the first box you do takes time and patience.

I've never see any indication that they replace the HDDs. But they must in some instances. Or do they just throw the HRs that don't work correctly in the recycle bin?

Good question. I assumed if they got a unit back with a dead hdd that they would replace it and send it out again but it is AT&T so who knows. Maybe they think they aren't worth it.

I’m guessing they don’t replace the bad ones and just recycle the receiver Rich.

Based on how things have gone with ATT since the takeover, I can only imagine how good of a job the ATT Equipment Return Center techs would do replacing with new HDD’s- it reminds me of the techs in these commercials from years ago-

Yup, that's what I've always thought too. Before the merger and after the merger. How much could a 500GB Pipeline cost? Amazon has them: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Pipe...98634&sprefix=500gb+seagate+pi,aps,160&sr=8-3
26 bucks! And they won't replace them. Yeah, they'd have to do some training but they'd do the right thing for a change.
