One major TV and two bedroom TV's that are seldom used. Is there any reason to pick one of these units over the other?

The 17s might be a good choice for you. Lots of info on threads here about the question you pose.

Depends on your needs. The HR54 is a server that can work with other receivers, DVRs and clients. The HS17 is a headless server that only works with clients.

HR54 serves one 4K TV and HS17 will serve two. You may not have a second 4K TV, but will you in say 2 years?

Depend of how many UHD TVs you have now, and in next year or two.

When I read this thread I expected to hear go with HR54 because of better reliability/performance given all the negative things I have read about the HS17. Ignoring the differences in features between the two, would you GURUs say that the HR54 and the HS17 are now equal in terms of reliability/performance?

They swapped out my 54 for my current 17 about 3 months ago. For the last month I am seeing two different but related problems. About once an hour or two my picture and sound will suddenly freeze for 2 seconds or so, then just pick right back up. A week or so ago now the screen will just go black and the sound didappears for two seconds. I have cold rebooted it several times, checked all the connections. Could be the client and maybe I would have the same problem with the 54. I haven't called because it's always such a circle jerk when I do.

How is your system wired, do you know? And what are the models of your clients? And are you connected to the internet? How?

The client is a c61k. Not exactly sure what you mean by how is it wired. The 61k is wired directly and sits right behind the TV. Not sure what the models are in thd bedrooms. They are neber used. The modem is wired directly to the TV, no via WiFi. My 4K is dim and not worth watching. I didn't have the4K problem before they added HRD. It cannot be turned off on this Sony TV. The PQ was stunning before. No 4K problems with Amazon or Netflix, just "D".

Yes I've been told that in the past. Whatever problem Sony has it be with the HDR because prior to HDR my 4K picture was perfect. The only problem watching 4K is associated our channels.

So is there an Ethernet cable plugged into your hs17? If so unplug it and see what happens without it being plugged in for a while.

I get that 2 second freeze from time to time (certainly not every hour). It's such a minor thing I don't even think about it. For others it's a deal breaker.

HR54. Right now servers are still slow!!!! Hate my C61Ks. Went back to using the HR54 in main TV and the C61K on a with, only using when watching 4K. I have 2) 4K Tvs too.

I have a HR54 and C61K. I can record a 4K program while watching another 4K program at the same time. I just cannot watch two at the same time, even on different TV's. There's not much for 4K content on different channels at the same time so it doesn't really matter! My .02 cents.
