I've always used externals, but would be interested in possibly using an internal in my Genie now that my 10TB external is worthless. Is it very easy to do? Is there any place I could find something that would walk me through it? I've changed out hundreds in PC's, but don't know where to start with a DVR. TIA.

    So the BLUE WD is:
    Western Digital 6TB WD Blue PC Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 256 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD60EZAZ

    The Purple is:
    Western Digital 6TB WD Purple Surveillance Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, , 64 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD60PURZ

How does this affect DTV performance? Please advise.

I can only speak for the Blue, I’ve never had a purple. No problems for almost 3 years now....

If you could pull SMART data … then it will tell more about the drive

I had a 8tb Purple that "died" as an external after the June update (kept rebooting after 20-25 mins). Just to let you know, in reading through the posts the one thing that popped out was that according to a Directv guy, the max they support is 6tb. I just installed a used 6tb Purple in my external case, and all is fine. Prefer bigger, but at least I am past the 1tb internal.

Our members would disagree, as they found the limit as 12 TB.

Currently with this software version, yes that will work if you disconnect the Sat input coax. Once you reconnect as posted previously, it will start to reboot and not work properly for any drive over 6TB.

Can you go and get a Genie, and connect a 6TB drive, and then an 8, 10 and 12TB drive and post your results here in this thread? Then if you can reproduce the issue, pull SMART data then it will tell more about the drive and problems.

I was hesitant to report it, but about 4 weeks ago I reconnected my 10TB external drive to my HR54, and it began working like normal again. I was going to give it a few weeks to make certain it continued to do so before posting that here. Unfortunately, yesterday morning at the usual 2:49 am, there was a new software update (0x1410). Since then, my HR54 won't recognize the drive, and it, and the 4 HR24's on my whole home network will only see the internal drive on the Genie. I have rebooted, reconnected, etc. several times to no avail. Just curious what others are experiencing.

Honestly, it almost seems intentional on the part of DTV/ATT. Two of the last three software updates rendered any HD over 6 TB useless. Maybe less than that after this most recent debacle, I don't know.

So what do you get from the 54 on ethernet with no coax...just the recordings (21% full 10TB HD)? Anything else? And does that eliminate it from being seen by any receivers on "whole home?" And no rebooting, you said? Trying to find a way to use my 10TB external....again. Thanks.
